Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, and pneumatics required
• Ability to work safely and effectively with minimal supervision required

Vibration Analysis
• Become familiar with plant vibration software and current VM program including:
Bently System 1 Evo and Emerson Machinery Health
• Monthly plant vibration programs

• Monthly vibration summary and Monthly Reporting.
Oil Monitoring
• Become familiar with plant Oil Condition monitoring program.
• Monthly involvement with oil condition program
• Provide recommendations for root cause and mitigation options.
• Build a monthly Oil Condition summary as part of Monthly Reporting.
Failures / Improvements
• Assist with root cause failure determination.
• Identify, quantify, and implement initiatives that will improve overall equipment reliability, safe operation, and performance.
• Coordinate plant equipment improvement trials, including technical input, tracking, and reporting.
• Ensure alignment of all trial work with Management of Change policy.
• Interface and communicate effectively with other power plant personnel.
• The ideal candidate will have a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field, as well as experience working with mechanical systems in an industrial setting. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.
The candidate should have 10 to 15 years’ experience and knowledgeable in thermal power plants working such as coal fired or natural gas fired or combined cycle (steam turbine, generator, power boilers, and balance of plant). Have sound or solid technical knowledge in these systems.
Added advantage will be post high school or college qualifications such as mechanical/chemical process technology/engineering certificates; understanding of ASME codes such as B31.1, ASME Section VIII Div I/II etc

TS Power Plant is a 203 MWnet power plant that operates a drum type PRB Coal B&W boiler and a Toshiba steam turbine generator. The plant went commercial in 2008 and has an excellent performance record. The plant also has a water treatment plant, air quality control systems for NOx, SO2, mercury and particulate removal baghouse. It uses an Emerson Ovation DCS system for control and latest state of the art instrumentation with BUS technology communication. In 2024 the plant will also be able to run 100% natural gas on top of being able to run on coal. A 200 MW PV solar power plant is being added to the existing coal plant and will go commercial in 2024.

Barrick Gold Corporation is seeking a Mechanical Systems Technologist to join our TS Power Plant Department. The TS Power Plant Department is responsible for the optimization of the performance activities for the TS Power Plant boiler, steam turbine, and the balance and alignment of objectives with the business objectives. Responsibilities include coal and gas fired power plant and solar plant equipment, technical aspects of maintenance, performance, and construction projects, and compliance with applicable codes and specification. The Mechanical Systems Technologist supports the environmental, health, and safety programs by maintaining adherence to change management procedures, safety meeting and training.
Responsibilities and Expectations
Working with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance on technical support for plant systems
Environmental, Health, and Safety Compliance
Outage planning and support for all plant systems, steam boiler, fuel systems, steam turbine, generator, and auxiliaries, pumps, piping systems, and valves, air quality control systems, water treatment, and chemistry.
Systems Critical Valves
• Working with operations and maintenance groups, perform criticality assessment of system critical valves.
• Develop and maintain valve maintenance program, spare parts, and upcoming outage maintenance (4Syte Boiler and High Energy Piping for superheated steam pipes and feedwater piping program).
• Create work orders and purchases required for valves and parts for maintenance outages
• Build scopes of work and oversee contractor valve replacements and maintenance
Aging Plant Infrastructure
• Gain an understanding of plant system and processes, identify and mitigate single point failure locations.
• Analyze aging plant equipment, prioritize findings, and create plans to address issues and prevent future failures.
• Maintain TS Power Plant current Risk Register
• Create and maintain safety critical and system critical equipment lists
• Assist with reliability considerations when selecting new or upgrading equipment.
Vibration Analysis
• Become familiar with plant vibration software and current VM program including:
Bently System 1 Evo and Emerson Machinery Health
• Monthly plant vibration programs
• Assist maintenance department and contractors with vibration mitigation projects.
• Monthly vibration summary and Monthly Reporting.
Oil Monitoring
• Become familiar with plant Oil Condition monitoring program.
• Monthly involvement with oil condition program
• Provide recommendations for root cause and mitigation options.
• Build a monthly Oil Condition summary as part of Monthly Reporting.
Failures / Improvements
• Assist with root cause failure determination.
• Identify, quantify, and implement initiatives that will improve overall equipment reliability, safe operation, and performance.
• Coordinate plant equipment improvement trials, including technical input, tracking, and reporting.
• Ensure alignment of all trial work with Management of Change policy.
• Interface and communicate effectively with other power plant personnel.
• The ideal candidate will have a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field, as well as experience working with mechanical systems in an industrial setting. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.
The candidate should have 10 to 15 years’ experience and knowledgeable in thermal power plants working such as coal fired or natural gas fired or combined cycle (steam turbine, generator, power boilers, and balance of plant). Have sound or solid technical knowledge in these systems.
Added advantage will be post high school or college qualifications such as mechanical/chemical process technology/engineering certificates; understanding of ASME codes such as B31.1, ASME Section VIII Div I/II etc
