Learn more about CPJ’s fight to defend freedom of the press here: http://cpj.org/ Nearly half the journalists killed worldwide in 2022 were killed in the Americas – a reflection of the risks journalists face in the region. While deadly violence remains a major form of censorship in countries like Mexico and Haiti, a combination of tactics is being used to stifle press freedom, criminalize journalism, and push reporters into exile. Entire regions have now become so-called silenced zones, where journalists are no longer able to do meaningful critical or investigative reporting. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) confronts these challenges by documenting major press freedom violations and the context in which they happened, supporting local reporters, working in partnership with media organizations, and doing advocacy on their behalf with governments and regional bodies. CPJ’s work has secured the release of dozens of imprisoned journalists, supported the development of new safety mechanisms, and served as the basis for campaigns seeking to derogate criminal defamation laws and end impunity.
