Your Job:

Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in our... brain, and impaired glutamate homeostasis causes various neurological diseases. In bacteria, glutamate is the major amino group donor and crucial for the industrial production of chemicals in white biotechnology. To understand glutamate homeostasis in these two system, a neuroscience (IBI-1 https://www.fz-juelich.de/en/ibi/ibi-1) and a biotechnology institute (IBG-1, https://www.fz-juelich.de/de/ibg/ibg-1/forschung/systemische-mikrobiologie) have teamed up to generate novel fluorescent sensors that permit the quantification of intracellular glutamate concentrations in living cells in real time.

We are looking for a doctoral researcher who will
• use atomistic MD simulations to optimize affinity, glutamate selectivity and pH sensitivity of existing glutamate binding proteins in silico
• generate fluorescent glutamate sensors based on such glutamate binding proteins and characterize them with fluorescence spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime measurements
• and thus identify a glutamate sensor with low affinity, high selectivity for glutamate, and little pH sensitivity
• and subsequently use this novel sensor to test cytoplasmic and synaptic vesicle glutamate concentrations in giant presynaptic nerve terminals in cultured neurons and
• cytoplasmic glutamate concentrations in selected Corynebacterium glutamicum strains to obtain information on proteins relevant for bacterial glutamate homeostasis and glutamate dynamics

Surfaces are crucial for the functional properties of a... wide variety of materials. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is often the best and sometimes the only suitable method to provide structural information about disordered surfaces and surface functionalization. To approach the sensitivity and selectivity limitations of standard NMR, an electrochemistry (IEK-9, https://www.fz-juelich.de/de/iek/iek-9/) and a structural biology institute (IBI-7, https://www.fz-juelich.de/de/ibi/ibi-7/) join forces in order to develop and apply surface-selective dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR techniques, targeting amyloid fibrils and battery interfaces.

We are looking for a doctoral researcher who will
• develop high resolution solid-state DNP NMR techniques for surface characterization of functional nanomaterials.
• apply these methods to problems in structural biology and in electrochemistry, where surface processes play a similarly crucial role for materials properties.
• chemically attach radicals at or near surfaces to "illuminate" their local structural environment.
• conduct surface and interface characterization as well as depth profiling of ceramic/polymer hybrid electrolyte materials for battery applications.
• investigate interactions between amyloid fibrils and selectively spin-labeled ligands.

Your Profile:
• Master`s degree in chemistry or related area
• Prior experience with nuclear magnetic resonance
• Some experience in surface chemistry desirable
• Broad interest in functional materials science

Your Job:

There is a current opening for a doctoral project that... would work at the intersection of statistical physics, neural network hardware in neuromorphic systems, and computer science. The project area is to tackle a large class of important computational problems that still challenge science and technology: NP hard problems in combinatorial optimization, which includes scheduling, routing, and many resource allocation problems. The approach will be to combine insights from statistical physics in understanding hardness of such problems and the dynamics of solvers, with biologically-inspired computational hardware approaches to build more energy-efficient physical systems.

We are looking for a doctoral researcher who will
• explore and improve physics-based and neural network approaches (Hopfield networks, Ising systems, Boltzmann machines, etc) in the solving of non-convex optimization problems
• characterize analytically the top optimization solving algorithms
• develop tools for implementing and tuning (e.g., hyperparameters) physical solvers based on biologically-inspired hardware
• develop and quantify improved schemes compatible with hardware, compare and benchmark to competing approaches

The project will be jointly supervised by experts from the Peter Grünberg Institute (PGI-14: Neuromorphic Compute Nodes) and the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-6: Computational and Systems Neuroscience)

Your Profile:
• Masters degree in physics, electrical/electronic engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or related fields
