About Lander University

Founded in 1872, Lander University is a co-educational, state-assisted, comprehensive, regional, four-year university in Greenwood, S.C. With more than 4,100 students, Lander provides exceptional educational opportunities within its traditional liberal arts and science programs, and its professional programs in business, education, and nursing.

Dr. Richard Cosentino was appointed as Lander University’s 12th President in the summer of 2015. In 2016, under his leadership, the University approved a new mission statement and developed a bold strategic plan, titled “Launch,” which continues to result in student success and academic growth across the entire University. Lander’s Fall 2021 enrollment marks the largest in its 150-year history. The University opened Fall 2022 with 4,107 students, a 7% increase over the previous year’s enrollment, setting a new enrollment record for the fourth consecutive year. Included in this impressive growth is a 139% increase in graduate enrollment over the last year. Since Fall 2015, Lander’s cumulative enrollment increase of 52% is the largest percentage increase of all public universities in South Carolina. As the state’s fastest-growing public institution of higher education, Lander projects a total enrollment of 5,000 students within the next three years. In addition to the enrollment growth, the University’s endowment has grown by approximately 100% since Dr. Cosentino’s arrival.

Lander’s six academic colleges and honors college provide students with an education that integrates the liberal arts and sciences with professional studies; brings them into frequent contact with diverse ideas and culture; and guides them in developing communication skills and the ability to work well with others. Through these academic units, Lander offers students over 90 areas of study, including signature academic programs in emerging and high-demand fields. These programs are attracting academically talented students from across the state and the nation.

Along with its tremendous growth, Lander continues to be recognized for its quality and innovative academic programs. In 2022-23, U.S. News & World Report placed the University at #3 among the Top Public Schools in the South. It also named Lander as one of the South’s best colleges for veterans.

In 2019, Lander became the newest member of the University Center of Greenville (UCG), a higher education collaboration of seven highly ranked South Carolina universities and colleges. As a partner institution of the UCG, Lander provides students with the convenience of taking courses in one of South Carolina’s largest metropolitan markets.
