The Springfield News-Leader/news-leader.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for an inquisitive and determined reporter with a digital-first mind set to provide watchdog coverage of the state capitol and clear-eyed analysis of Missouri politics for readers in the Show-Me State and beyond...
An ideal candidate is someone with a passion for politics — municipal to presidential — who pursues enterprise stories that address local concerns rather than localizing news coming out of the statehouse.
We’re not looking for a transcriptionist to record turn-of-the-screw coverage of committee hearings, but rather an informed observer who will investigate the broader implications and motivations of legislative action and explain the significance to readers.
Development of a wide and varied stable of sources both in and out of politics is critical, as is the ability to identify trending questions and chase the most compelling political stories in Missouri.
In addition to coverage of the state legislature and executive offices, this reporter will cover high-interest news about Missouri’s congressional delegation and coordinate with USA Today Network partners around the state and region.
Much of this reporter’s work will be in Jefferson City; home location is flexible but must be within convenient distance to cover the legislative session. Occasional travel to Springfield will be required.
The News-Leader is the hometown paper of the third-largest city in Missouri, with network partners that include the Columbia Daily Tribune.
Responsibilities:
Provide must-read coverage of state and national politics that breaks news and keeps audience needs at the forefront. A successful mix of stories will include those that target casual readers across the state as well as premium work intended to attract and retain digital subscribers.Coordinate with reporters and editors in Springfield and Columbia to develop story ideas and tailor coverage to local audiences. Be courageous about experimentation. Identify enterprise opportunities and chase them with passion. Leverage diverse tools, text, images and video to reach readers in print, digital and on social media. Use metrics and analytics to increase digital audience and engagement. Serve as an ambassador to the public on the News-Leader’s behalf and actively seek to engage with marginalized portions of the community. Pitch in with stories on other topics and perform other duties as necessary. On occasion, work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, at times unexpectedly. News happens.
Requirements:
Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A strong foundation in core writing and reporting skills and familiarity with public records.
Enthusiasm for deep research and artful storytelling.
Solid news judgment and a commitment to accuracy.
Top-notch planning, organizational and time management skills.
Communication, communication, communication.
Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
Understanding of metrics, social media and SEO.
Self-motivation and self-direction.
Ability to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and a motor vehicle record check & drug screen.
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
Your resume – one to two pages.
A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
Links to 5-10 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
