PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Seattle Art Museum connects art to life. SAM strives for its employees, volunteers, and interns to reflect the community in which it exists. Emerging Arts Leader internships are intended to open career pathways for individuals who bring dynamic backgrounds and perspectives to their work in art, museums, or community engagement.
While diversity can embody many characteristics, this internship program is intended to engage with historically under-represented groups in the museum field including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native... American, or Pacific Islander descent.
EMERGING ARTS LEADER, EQUITY & COMMUNICATIONS
Partnering with SAM’s Director for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, this intern will help tell the story of the museum’s ongoing work to address the effects of structural racism and build a more inclusive environment for our staff, volunteers, visitors, and community. The intern will do this through the following:
• Work across departments to gather and organize information related to SAM’s equity, diversity, and community partnership initiatives.
• Craft clear and transparent communications about SAM’s equity related initiatives and programs for use in presentations, reports to committees, SAM’s Board of Trustees, and external community partners.
• Maintain and update content for SAM’s internal equity page.
• Prepare a report on one of SAM’s current DEI initiatives and present at an internal committee, all staff, or SAM Board of Trustees meeting.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This intern will learn to navigate a multi-department organization, form meaningful professional relationships, and apply their own perspectives and leadership experience to work at the museum. In addition, this intern will:
• Develop a clear understanding of SAM’s current work in racial equity at both an institutional and departmental level.
• Learn to collect, organize, and summarize information from multiple sources.
• Refine a writing style that clearly articulates program goals, outcomes, and impacts for an organization-wide audience.
PAY RANGE: The hourly rate for this role is $18.69 to $18.69.
FSLA STATUS & COMPENSATION:
This intern will be hired as a temporary, non-exempt employee. Along with the above pay rate, this intern will be eligible for the following benefits:
• Paid sick time accrued at a rate of 0.0385 per hour worked, estimated at 18.25 hours total for a 30-week intern.
• SAM Savings & 403(b) Retirement Plan, with Roth option available.
Fringe benefits include two guest passes to SAM, access to RIC Fitness Center, Tier III AAM membership, discounts for SAM membership, Shop, and MARKET, access to member rates for ticketed events at SAM, and a subsidized ORCA card.
EXPECTED TIME COMMITMENT:
15 hours per week, from October 2023 to May 2024. Schedule is flexible within Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm office hours. Start and end dates are flexible depending on intern needs and academic schedule.
Due to the hands-on nature of this internship, a majority of this position’s work will be on-site. Limited weekly hours for remote work may be available if flexible scheduling is needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Research, gather, and organize information related to SAM’s work on equity, diversity, and community partnerships.
• Support Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in writing and drafting presentation materials
• Work across departments to gather data about specific equity-related projects. This may include meeting with staff partners, requesting files, and administrative work.
• Develop and deliver a presentation in one of SAM’s exhibit spaces.
• Complete a job shadow with frontline volunteers during open hours.
• Complete a one-page reflection, blog post, or interview about your internship experience.
• Attend Enrichment Sessions, informational interviews, and check-ins as available.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
• Demonstrated interest or experience in the arts and/or community engagement. Competitive candidates will be able to articulate why this Emerging Arts Leader Internship supports their professional goals in museums or the wider arts industry.
• Strong writing and communication skills, and ability to clearly articulate goals, progress, and outcomes to a professional audience.
• Clear understanding of and ability to discuss concepts related to racial equity, intersectionality, and social justice.

EDUCATION & REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Applicants are not required to have previous professional or museum experience. Competitive applicants will show a demonstrated commitment to the arts and leadership in community building.
Emerging Arts Leader internships are open to applicants at any stage of their career journey, including graduate and post-graduate students. At minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposure: Work areas are primarily inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Work is occasionally performed at other indoor and outdoor sites.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Stationary Work: Approximately 80% of time is spent stationary while working at a desk. Balance of time (approximately 20%) is spent moving around the work area. Occasional extended periods of standing may be required when assisting at Museum events.
Communication: Clear and effective communication with volunteers, donors, members, the public, and co-workers is necessary.
Moving: The ability to move up to twenty pounds on occasion is necessary for moving files, equipment, and supplies. Must be able to regularly position self to access files.
Office Work: Ability to effectively and regularly operate a computer, keyboard, and other office productivity machinery, such as copy machines and printers, and ability to inspect, prepare, and use paperwork, files, equipment, and supplies is necessary.

Public Programming:
Organize and execute public programs (in-person and virtual) related to the Shirley Family Collection of works by Alexander Calder..
Along with members of the public engagement team, plan and coordinate programs, including events related to SAM’s collection - with an emphasis on the Shirley Family Collection- as well as exhibitions at all three locations.
Recruit, schedule, and supervise teaching artists, temporary staff, and event volunteers working with public programs.
Provide logistical and administrative support for programs.
Community Engagement and Partnerships:
Cultivate relationships with local organizations and cultural workers to build partnerships; serve as point person for community partnership inquiries and communications associated with the Shirley Family Collection and the broader museum, including management of the community pass program.
Develop outreach and programming strategy related to the Shirley Family Collection among non-profit partners, artists, and educational entities.
Administration:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Primary responsibility for all data entry to small-business accounting software, including accurate client/artist contact information, artwork inventory setup and tracking, rental, purchase and installment contracts, weekly cash counts, twice monthly billing and entry of all receipts.
2. Calculate variable percentages for sales and rentals then generate notice of sales to artists and their galleries. Track installment purchases in Excel spreadsheet and ensure all data is accurate.
3. Coordinate with Finance department on monthly check runs to artists and their galleries. Resolve problems with checks when needed.
4. Follow procedures for overseeing client contracts, artist contracts, inventory management & reports including quarterly physical inventory.
5. Follow procedures for overseeing accurate location of artwork inventory, including when it goes out to clients, returns from clients, and returns to artists. Keep artwork stored safely and appropriately within gallery setting.
6. Provide front line client contact/service to gallery customers including discussion of artists, art styles, mediums and sizes. Work with clients to locate appropriate pieces of artwork and process invoices, credit card payments and provide follow up.
7. Provide art handling services to both Gallery Manager and gallery clients. Hang art when needed in the gallery, move art when needed in the gallery, hang shows in both SAM Gallery and Taste Café as needed, and assist clients / artists with loading art into and out of vehicles.
8. Maintain SAM Gallery artists’ web site by editing and uploading images, artist statements and resumes in accurate and timely manner.
9. Track calendars, dates and deadlines for all marketing related activities and assist Associate Director for Retail Operations and SAM Gallery Manager with digital marketing via SAM’s internal processes for Evites, Enews, and social media.
10. Pack, ship and process payments for artwork shipping.
11. Ability to perform minor repairs to artwork hanging devices and frames, such as rewiring and attaching hooks.
12. Represent the Museum and the SAM Gallery with a high level of integrity and professionalism.
13. Utilize excellent customer service to proactively assist customers in a pleasant and positive manner.
