WAN-IFRA is seeking an Executive Director to oversee and run its media development programmes across the globe. This is a senior management position that works closely with other senior members of WAN-IFRA divisions and directly oversees a larger-scale gender equality and media programme that is currently active in 18 countries globally.

The successful candidate should be well networked across... the globe with a deep understanding of creating and delivering adaptive media development support programmes in complex environments. Additionally, they will have 15 years plus experience and success managing regionally and culturally diverse teams with specific experience managing and motivating teams in Eurasia, Southeast Asia, Sub Saharan Africa and the Arab Region. The successful candidate will have experience conceptualising and implementing diversity and inclusion strategies and approaches, having both formalised as well as practical experience in this specific field. This role also requires a highly skilled fundraising expert, who excels in both public and private donor outreach, engagement and management, with a demonstrated record of success.

Position Details

The Executive Director is the most senior member of the Women in News implementation team, and is a member of the WAN-IFRA management team. They oversee multiple multi-million Euro budgets and programmes which includes both strategic and operational management of activities, as well as an implementation team of 40+ key experts and project managers. This individual will also manage and grow the relationships with donors and champions that support WAN-IFRA’s media development work.

Specific Deliverables include:
• Maintain strategic and operational accountability for all WAN-IFRA's media development programmes including but not exclusive to the existing projects funded by a variety of Nordic donors and US partners, serving as primary liaison with the donor(s) while also overseeing budgets, workplan, and resourcing.
• Lead bilateral and consortium based fundraising efforts to diversify and build on WAN-IFRA’s current public donor portfolio in support of the organisation’s overall mandate and mission to support media independence around the globe.
• Responsibility to ensure uphold WAN-IFRA 's compliance with donor requirements, developing and maintaining organisational guidelines, handbooks and policies as necessary and working closely with the WAN-IFRA finance and administration department to ensure project expenditure and programme activities as well as procurement comply with WAN-IFRA’s Media Freedom Administrative Manual and donor procurement guidelines;
• Oversight of monitoring and evaluation for media development programmes, working with MREL experts as well as team members to instil a rigorous yet adaptive approach to monitoring, evaluating and learning from project implementation. Ensure specific donor narrative and financial reporting requirements are met in a timely manner and are in keeping with WAN-IFRA standards;
• Coordinate and manage Media Freedom Advisory Board, liaising directly with Board Chair to establish meeting schedules, manage individual members, share information and strategy as primary liaison between WAN-IFRA and this body;
• Participate in semi-annual Board Meetings at request of CEO, preparing supporting presentations and reports as required and agreed upon in writing with CEO;
• Work closely with CEO to ensure all media development activities reflect WAN-IFRA’s overall approach to media freedom and diversity & inclusion;
• Work with the Executive Director of Press Freedom as joint division heads to ensure that all media development related activities reflect WAN-IFRA's approach to media freedom work, which is to combine advocacy with development actions in parallel where possible;
• Spearhead the design and effective execution of media development activities by project directors and managers, ensuring that they meet the needs of the target stakeholders and are in alignment with programme results framework;
• Facilitate regular communication, collaboration, guidance and support to project directors and managers to enhance their performance and professional growth for effective delivery of activities across projects and programmes utilising an agile approach to drive results for the programme;
• Build WAN-IFRA media development and gender focused communities within the global membership base as a means of enhancing WAN-IFRA’s membership value and offering.

Key Competencies
• A minimum of 15 years of relevant and progressively responsible professional experience in the field of partnerships and operational management, with a significant part of this period at an appropriate managerial level, of which preferably 10 years acquired at the international level.
• At least 10 years of recognized experience in leadership and proven ability in planning and managing international projects or programmes focusing on media development, gender equality, and/or press freedom themes.
• Relevant work experience with bilateral, international donors/agencies, non-governmental organisations, private sector companies and/or high net worth individuals in this sector.
• Demonstrated strategic planning and programme/project management abilities, including ability to identify key strategic issues, objectives, opportunities and risks; administer and manage significant financial and human resources; and exercise sound judgement and decision-making skills.
• Proven ability to build collaborative partnerships and networks with diverse groups of organisations, including intergovernmental, public, civil society, private sector and high net worth individuals, particularly in the context of resource mobilisation.
• Capacity to provide leadership to guide and motivate staff, demonstrating a high sense of objectivity and professional integrity, as well as ability to build trust and to manage, lead and motivate a large and diverse body of staff in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
• Strong leadership disposition, service orientation and robust experience in leading others (individuals, teams/groups) to achieve common goals that catalyse positive change;
• Ability to conceptualise, develop and implement projects end to end, with exceptional time and budget management skills, and with an innate capacity to oversee and manage multiple projects and competing deadlines;
• Experience in assessing needs, designing/delivering high-value organisational development interventions;
• First-hand experience in building capacity of team members and solid facilitation, coaching, mentoring skills that deliver high-impact learning benefits for directors, managers and team members;
• Excellent financial management skills with first-hand experience in implementing and monitoring huge and high-level budgets and ensuring efficient and effective use of resources for delivery of programs;
• Knowledge/application of change management, organisational development principles/methodologies e.g., culture change etc.;
• Deep understanding of people and performance management approaches and systems, with an ability to tap into intuitive leadership and motivational practices (robust experience as a professional coach an asset);
• Established networks within the media and gender/diversity CSO space, as well as academia across the globe;
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Direct experience working in a membership-based environment an asset.
