What are the rules of debate? A debate is basically an argument with strict rules of conduct. It is not a shouting match between two sides with different points of view. Three speakers work together as a team. The Team Line is the basic statement of “why the topic is true” (for the affirmative team) and “why the topic is false” (for the negative team).
How do you conduct a debate? In a formal debate, as practiced by high school and college debating clubs, each team presents arguments to support its side of a proposition and to refute the opposing side. The speakers must follow set procedures. The teams compete against each other, with judges deciding which team has presented its arguments more effectively.
How many people are on each team in a debate? A debate team typically has between three and five members, but three-person teams are the most common. Three-person teams are ideal because they give debaters more experience working with a larger group to enhance negotiation and collaboration skills.
How many speeches are given in a debate? Each team has two or three constructive speeches, and two to three rebuttal speeches. The affirmative gives the first constructive speech, and the rebuttals alternate: negative, affirmative, negative, affirmative. The affirmative has both the first and last speeches of the debate.
