Overview
AARP Foundation works to end senior poverty by helping vulnerable people over 50 build economic opportunity. Our approach emphasizes equitable outcomes for populations that have faced systemic discrimination. We serve all people 50 plus and their families. Through vigorous legal advocacy and evidence-based solutions, and by building supportive community connections, we foster resilience, advance equity and restore hope.
Experience Corps is a community-based volunteer program with AARP Foundation that empowers people over 50 to serve as tutors to help students become better readers by the end of third grade. It is a proven “triple win,” helping students succeed, older adults thrive, and communities grow stronger. Experience Corps ensures volunteer success through extensive training, peer networks, and ongoing evaluation. Experience Corps employs a structured, evidence-based model that improves the overall reading ability of students by building their fluency, accuracy, and comprehension skills.
AARP Foundation is seeking four (4) Volunteer Site Coordinators to serve as vital project managers for the successful implementation, training, communications, planning, documentation, and evaluation processes required to operate a virtual tutoring site. Volunteer Site Coordinators will serve as the primary contact between schools/service site staff, virtual tutors, and AARP Foundation staff. Lastly, they will manage the ongoing implementation of virtual tutoring sessions for one (1) service site and up to 20 virtual volunteers serving approximately 40-50 kindergarten through third-grade students. These four positions are based in San Diego (2) and Detroit (2).
AARP Foundation is a proud Sponsoring Organization of the AmeriCorps VISTA program, which helps individuals and communities implement grassroots solutions designed to alleviate poverty. Founded as Volunteers to Service in America in 1965, the program places individuals at nonprofit organizations and public agencies that are fighting literacy, improving health services, reducing unemployment, increasing housing opportunities, reducing recidivism, and expanding access to technology for those living in rural and urban areas of poverty across America.
As an AmeriCorps VISTA Member, you will receive a modest biweekly living allowance to cover basic expenses and access to free basic healthcare coverage. At the end of your service, you can choose between a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,895) or a cash stipend, and will receive 12 months of noncompetitive eligibility (NCE) hiring status within the federal government.
