The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to defending and protecting the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Position:

Based in Jackson, MS, the Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director, and plays a key role in bolstering the ACLU-MS’s visibility across the state of Mississippi.

The Director of Communications will set and guide the strategy for all external communications to consistently articulate the mission of the ACLU-MS, reinforce the ACLU brand, and position the organization as the source for information about constitutional rights and civil liberties in Mississippi.

The Director of Communications will work closely with a senior peer group within the organization as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives to increase public awareness and appreciation of civil liberties, advocate for positive changes in the civil liberties landscape, and engage supporters in achieving our mission.

Key Responsibilities:

• Strategy: Identify specific communications goals for the ACLU of Mississippi, develop plans and strategies to reach them, and measure progress. Determine appropriate communications tactics to disseminate ACLU news, promote advocacy campaigns, publicize events and broaden ACLU audiences.
• Media Relations: Handle all aspects of media relations, including writing and disseminating press releases and advisories, pitching stories to targeted reporters, fielding media requests, managing a media database, drafting talking points, making statements, arranging interviews with ACLU spokespersons, and coaching spokespersons.
• Digital Communications: Manage the online presence of the ACLU-MS, leading staff in generating content that is engaging, up-to-date, and results in measurable action. Develop and manage posting of content to ACLU-MS’s digital channels, including web site, social media (currently Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) and email to subscribers.
• Print Materials: Manage development, distribution, and maintenance of all print collateral including newsletters, toolkits, educational material, brochures, annual report, event invitations and promotional items. Provide editorial and design direction, handle quality control and proofreading, oversee production, and create and implement distribution plans.
• Community Outreach: Assist with initiating and strengthening relationships and collaborations with organizations and leaders who are aligned with the ACLU's mission and purpose. Identify opportunities for community outreach at events and fairs and mobilize volunteers to represent the ACLU-MS through tabling activities. Recruit, train and deploy volunteers to speak about the ACLU-MS before community groups and in schools/universities.
• Communications Team: Manage relationships with vendors such as designers and printers.
• Recruit and direct communications intern(s). Train and deploy volunteers involved in community outreach. Provide counsel to ACLU-MS chapters on marketing, communications and public relations.
• Professional Development: Attend national and regional ACLU training and staff conferences.
• Miscellaneous: Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 5 years of experience and demonstrated success in communications or related field, preferably in the not-for-profit sector.
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing or public relations preferred. Graduate degree in a related field is desirable.
• Experience developing and implementing communications strategies, balancing strategic and tactical work.
• Excellent writing/editing skills for both print and online audiences plus strong verbal communication skills. Proven ability to transform knowledge into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate information to targeted audiences through the most appropriate distribution channels.
• Demonstrated successful experience directing media campaigns, writing press releases, handling press contacts, and training/coaching spokespersons. Knowledge of Mississippi media preferred.
• Creative aptitude and familiarity with interactive design, website and social media management and email marketing strategy. Proficiency with digital content management systems a plus.
• Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications.
• Solid computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, database management and internet research.
• Commitment to working with shared leadership, in cross-functional teams, and with diverse constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters.
• Strong time management skills and ability to remain flexible in order to implement multiple projects simultaneously, with tight deadlines
• Entrepreneurial attitude conducive to creating and implementing new initiatives
• Maturity, humility, professionalism, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence and accuracy
• A demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and social justice.
• Ability to work non-traditional hours or to travel out-of-town and overnight may be required.

Compensation and Terms

This position is full-time, exempt, and will pay an annual salary of between $70,000 and $75,000, depending on experience. • Conducting research on trends in the privacy regulation landscape, including proposed privacy legislation across the US, and leading practices for strengthening data protection practices.
• Prepping for, attending, and contributing to Program Team and Working Group meetings.
• Reviewing ACLU data practices and working with Departments to strengthen those practices.
• Drafting memoranda, reports, and presentations

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS The internship is open to students enrolled at U.S. graduate and law schools who will have completed at least one year of postgrad school before the internship commences.

Interns should possess the following:

• Knowledge of data governance principles and practices, including data confidentiality and privacy considerations.
• Understanding of the current privacy regulation landscape in the United States.
• Understanding of data management systems and how they operate (preferred).
• Knowledge of non-profit management and operations (preferred).

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW• Location: Due to COVID-19 our offices are currently operating in reduced capacities. We plan to launch an internship program that offers a limited number of remote or hybrid intern positions. Candidates for this internship who are located in proximity to the NY office may opt to work with us in-person following a hybrid (part in-person and part-remote) schedule.
• Time Commitment: Summer internships require a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week.
• Internship Duration: Full-time internships extend for a 10-week period and begin either May 30 or June 12, 2023.
• Stipend: A stipend is available for those students who do not receive course credit and are lawfully authorized to work. Students who receive outside funding are eligible for a partial stipend to bring their total funding up to the level of the ACLU’s stipend amount for that term, if applicable. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit. Below is the stipend breakdown by term:
• $18.57/hour for undergraduate students or equivalent experience and $21.42/hour for graduate and law students or equivalent experience.

Reporting to the Project Director, the Staff Attorney or Senior Staff Attorney will be responsible for conducting strategic impact litigation and advocacy to advance rights and challenge harms in the national security context.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Engage in litigation through: legal research; fact development; working with clients and witnesses; drafting pleadings, briefs, and legal memoranda; discovery and motion practice; and conducting oral arguments in the trial and appellate courts
• Identify, develop, and lead new litigation, amicus, and other advocacy projects by conducting factual, legal, and strategic analysis, and devising relevant advocacy strategies, theories, and materials
• Policy advocacy to effect change reflecting Project priorities with federal and/or state agencies and Congress, in conjunction with the ACLU’s National Political Advocacy Department and state affiliates
• Advance Project priorities through public education, organizing and participating in coalitions, and developing relationships with partner organizations, other advocates, lawyers, academics, and potential clients
• Develop and maintain relationships with marginalized communities whose civil rights and liberties are harmed by discriminatory or abusive national security policies, and outside organizations advocating for or representing these communities
• Collaborate closely with staff across the organization to advance Project priorities
• Engage in public speaking, including at conferences and with the media
• Travel as required for litigation, conferences, and case and strategy development

• Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes

COMPENSATION

The ACLU has a litigator scale that determines pay for attorneys in our Legal Department. The range of salaries are the following, based on year of law school graduation (please consult the hiring manager for specific salary details, based on individual circumstances):
• 0-2 years since law school graduation: $85,000-$106,182
• 3-5 years since law school graduation: $118,927-$140,309
• 6-10 years since law school graduation: $146,732- $165,531
• 11-15 years since law school graduation: $168,627-$178,198
• 16-20 years since law school graduation: $179,880-$184,512
• 21-25 years since law school graduation: $185,447-$189,246
• 26-30+ years since law school graduation: $190,158- $193,860

These salaries are reflective of positions based in New York, NY. The salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
