We are currently hiring for start dates in 2024 and applications will be considered as they are received. If you have questions about the hiring process or timeline, please consult our team hiring FAQs or reach out to s2-research-careers@allenai.org with further questions.

Who We Are:

Semantic Scholar Research at the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) is an interdisciplinary research team focused on AI, HCI, ML, NLP, accessibility, and computational social science in support of Semantic Scholar’s mission of accelerating science. Semantic Scholar is an open platform that helps millions of scholars discover, understand, and synthesize scholarly papers, powered by a large-scale literature graph with 200M+ papers. Our research impacts the Semantic Scholar platform and the research community more broadly, and we regularly publish in high-profile conferences and journals in NLP (e.g., ACL, EMNLP), HCI (e.g., CHI, UIST, CSCW), ML (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR), IR (e.g., SIGIR), Accessibility (ASSETS), and other areas. Today, one of our major aims is to construct a powerful new LLM-powered scientific assistant that we expect will redefine the Semantic Scholar platform. Machine Learning Engineer, Applied Science and Technology, Environmental AI

This is a unique role on a newly formed team that is akin in scope, breadth, and pace to a founding AI engineer at a startup.

Who You Are:

You are a machine learning engineer passionate about AI for Earth. You are comfortable working at any point on the research to production cycle, from training and evaluating novel deep learning models to creating highly performant production services. You believe that AI can be a powerful force for good.

Who We Are:

We are a newly formed lean and fast moving AI team exclusively dedicated to Environmental AI. We believe that AI can help solve some of the biggest problems the world faces. We strongly believe in open and transparent AI (as does the broader organization). We highly value the machine learning research, academic, and engineering communities and we believe in fostering meaningful collaborations between them. We work closely with the many talented research scientists at AI2 (eg. Aristo, PRIOR) and we consider ourselves fortunate to have that opportunity. We publish when we can, but we spend the vast majority of our time on engineering and shipping AI products to users. The models we ship run at global scale in real time and must be performant. We all live in Seattle and we enjoy working together in person, or meeting over coffee. We teach and learn from one another constantly and we help each-other grow. We have a leadership team that strongly believes in us and believes that AI can be a powerful force for good. We want to get great things done and we want to move quickly, because there is an urgency to the environmental threats that our planet is facing. • Experience with the complete model development cycle, including data set construction, training, tuning, evaluation, performance profiling and optimization, and monitoring.

Preferred:
• Published papers in ML/AI (NLP or CV)
• Open source contributions
• Evidence of work on environmental cause
• Highly proactive and self-motivated
• Experience with LLM assisted engineering
• Experience with satellite imagery and/or AIS/GPS Data

Who You Are...

You are a software engineer who enjoys building web applications. You like thinking about how to make sites that are easy to use, fast, and accessible. You’re someone who thrives in a small, dynamic organization where there can sometimes be large amounts of ambiguity and autonomy. You’re self-directed and enjoy working independently while still having fun technical conversations with your team to determine the best route forward. A key interest you have is in extending our public web presence at allenai.org. If you would like to collaborate with us to implement ideas around communicating our work to the greater world we would love to talk to you.

You’re interested in being the resident expert in building for the web. Your focus will be on the front-end, working in technologies like JavaScript, HTML and CSS. There will be an opportunity to work on the supporting back-end services, deployment infrastructure and other tooling as well – but this is a potential growth area and not something we’ll assess in the interview or expect of you.

Your Next Challenge:

You will collaborate with our communications team, researchers, and engineers to present our institute clearly to the outside world. You will also work with the rest of the team to develop demos for research applications and internal tools to help us organize and present our research. For example, your next challenge might be building a website to highlight the impact of the Aristo research project, building a portal to present our fundraising strategy as a nonprofit organization, or partnering with other engineers to build infrastructure that organizes our research datasets and publications.

What You’ll Need:
• A strong interest and focus on user experience.
• 2 years of industry experience building high quality web applications
• Fluency in JavaScript, CSS and HTML.
• Interest or experience using TypeScript, React, Next.js, and Webpack. While we don’t require familiarity with these technologies, you should expect to gain expertise in them at AI2.
• A solid understanding of the mechanics of a web browser, the differences between server-side and client execution, and the basics of the HTTP protocol.
• Experience parenting directly with product and design to develop websites.
• A basic understanding of UNIX development tools like git and bash, and an understanding of how programming languages like Go and Python different from JavaScript.
