The English Department at Tufts University invites applicants for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in 20th-21st century African American Literature to begin September 2023. This position is the John Holmes Assistant Professorship in the Humanities, established in 2020 with a trust distribution from Winslow Duke, A53, in honor of his favorite English professor, John A. Holmes, Jr., a noted poet and author who taught literature and modern poetry at Tufts for 28 years.

Qualifications

Candidates for the position may have a research focus on any aspect of 20th-21st century African American Literature, but we are especially interested in those with demonstrated expertise in African American women's writing. Candidates should have the ability to teach a broad range of courses, including surveys in 20th and 21st C African American Literature (fiction, poetry, non-fiction prose), special topics in the field, and graduate seminars. The successful candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduates writing senior theses and to participate in the English Graduate Program, including advising doctoral dissertations.

Evidence of ongoing scholarly activity and successful teaching experience required. Ph.D. must be awarded by August 2023.

The Department of African American Studies ( https://thecollege.syr.edu/african-american-studies/
) in Syracuse University’s College of Arts & Sciences seeks two
dynamic scholars of African American Literature to join the faculty
in Fall 2023.

One faculty line has been approved for a tenure-track assistant
professor.

The other appointment will be at the rank of assistant or associate
professor, depending on the candidate’s qualifications.

Both appointments require the selected individuals to have the
Ph.D. in hand by August 2023.

Qualifications

We seek scholars whose expertise is in African American literature
before 1900, or those who focus on twentieth and
twenty-first-century African American Literature. We are especially
interested in individuals whose teaching employs digital humanities
tools and can illuminate the phenomenon of the African Diaspora.
Ideally, applicants for the pre-1900 position should be able to
guide student explorations of Black literary developments of the
Atlantic World. Applicants for the twentieth and
twenty-first-century position should be able to address
international developments and perspectives in their courses.

Job Specific Qualifications

Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of the appointment.

Responsibilities

Successful candidates must show evidence and promise of strong
scholarship and sustained research activity, teaching excellence,
and a commitment to public engagement.

The positions require individuals to teach two courses per
semester, including surveys that introduce fiction, non-fiction
prose, and poetry; introductory writing intensive courses on Black
culture; upper-level courses on topics in their fields of
expertise; and required graduate seminars.

All department faculty are expected to mentor undergraduates and
graduate students engaged in research projects and thesis

66% Teaching: Develop, implement and review effective teaching/learning processes, incorporating appropriate methodology, technology and other tools; Remain current in discipline and update course content when appropriate to reflect current levels of student knowledge in the discipline; Develop a system for ongoing evaluation of both teaching and learning, including expectations of student competency and student learning outcomes; Work in partnership with immediate supervisor through a formal system of evaluation of instruction to identify strengths and weaknesses and identify professional development activities to improve student learning. May be required to teach at other campuses or on-line. Maintain appropriate schedule of office hours for student access and inquiry; Work in partnership with student success personnel on student advising and orientation.

20% Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity: Demonstrate a record of ongoing research, scholarship or creative activity appropriate to your academic discipline.

14% Service: Participate in institutional service roles such as but not limited to, college committees, club sponsorship, advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment and mentoring of new and part-time faculty.

Minimum Requirements:

Earned doctorate/terminal degree approved by the University and recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges with appropriate academic credentials verified by Tarleton's faculty credentialing processes.

PhD in English or related field, with a specialization an ethnic literature of the US, required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability in the discipline and show clear promise of teaching excellence as evidenced in evaluation by peers, department head, and college dean. Demonstrated ability for continuing scholarly contribution beyond that required for completion of the terminal degree. Documented yearly progress of professional achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service.
