The Staff Editor is responsible for the day-to-day management of a portfolio of materials dedicated to the AAMC journal, Academic Medicine. They will evaluate and edit manuscripts, and they will collaborate with journal editors and authors to improve the communication of complex information. The Staff Editor will collaborate with the team in developing and implementing editorial initiatives.
How will you make an impact?
• Performs substantive editing of a variety of scholarly manuscripts, including (a) editing the content to ensure that information is clearly organized and written and is presented according to journal policy and style guidelines and (b) incorporating appropriate feedback from reviewers, the editors, and other journal staff.
• Works collegially with the authors throughout the editing process, raising necessary questions, negotiating changes, giving feedback, enforcing policies, and coming to agreement on a final version for publication.
• Coordinates articles through the production process, including proofs.
• Consults with the journal staff in decision-making on style and policy issues related to editing.
• Manages the AM Last Page (LP) feature by consulting with the appointed assistant editor and editor-in-chief to review submissions, by scheduling LPs according to date and/or topic, and by working closely with LP authors and AAMC designers to substantively edit both the content and the design of LPs before sending them to the publisher.
• Leads all aspects of the LP-related work of matrixed staff supporting the LP feature.
• Acts as staff support for assistant editor for Medicine and the Arts (MATA) on Editorial Manager workflow and review process and consults as needed on submissions. Coordinates the process for acquiring permissions to reproduce copyrighted artwork for provisionally accepted MATA submissions. Schedules and coordinates the editing of the monthly MATA feature from the queue of accepted submissions.
• Works closely with the managing editor to facilitate the work of the journal’s freelance editors, including quality checking completed work, shepherding files into production, communicating frequently with freelancers to answer questions and provide feedback, and meeting occasionally with freelance editors.
• Provides support for the managing editor’s work maintaining the journal’s style and editing guides, training new editors, and providing feedback and guidance to colleagues about journal style.
• Manages the review process for revised manuscripts (and, as needed, new manuscripts), using professional judgment and expertise to make recommendations to the journal’s editors; communicates decisions (including revision requirements) to authors.

The Deputy Editor JAMA and
Multimedia will evaluate, review, and edit scientific

RESPONSIBILITIES:
