About the Committee

Each year, the Nominating Committee recommends a slate of candidates, subject to approval by the Board of Directors, for the Board of Directors to be voted on by the general membership to fill vacant Board seats. The Nominating Committee is responsible for reviewing applications, interviewing applicants and their references, and ultimately recommending a candidate slate through a rigorous vetting process.

Amnesty International USA deeply values inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in our human rights work, our team culture, and practices. People of all backgrounds and identities are welcome on the Nominating Committee. We seek a variety of identities, perspectives and ideas, and prohibit discrimination of any kind based on race, ethnicity, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, indigenous status, immigration status, genetics, disability, age, veteran status or any other legally protected and non-merit factors.

● Strong interpersonal skills, both verbal and written

● Knowledge of Google Docs and Workspace

● Ability to work independently and as part of a team

● Familiarity with AIUSA Governance

● Commitment to IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility)

● Appreciation of Amnesty’s culture

Roles and Responsibilities:

AIUSA’s Board of Directors consists of AIUSA members who are elected by the larger membership. The Nominating Committee plays an important role in supporting the Board in the election process. As a member of the committee, you help to identify, review, and recommend a diverse group of potential candidates who are interested in running for the Board.

The Nominating Committee also oversees the election of Board officers and makes recommendations for new Nominating Committee members.

Members of the Nominating Committee must be prepared to devote a significant amount of time to reviewing applications, interviewing prospective Board candidates, and checking their references during the late fall-early winter. The average weekly time commitment during this period is approximately 10 hours per week. The Nominating Committee also meets in-person over a weekend in January to select a proposed slate to present to the Board of Directors, as well as during the spring for the AGM. The Nominating Committee further reviews applications and interviews prospective new Nominating Committee members during the spring. Several other planning meetings will be held throughout the year. All meetings, except as specified above, are conducted remotely via Zoom.

Application Deadline

Submissions are due April 14th, 2023 at 5PM Pacific and will be reviewed in late April and early May. Interviews will take place in May, and a selection will be made in June. If appointed, you will begin serving your two-year term during the Summer of 2023
