The assistant sports editor manages a staff of 13 people — reporters, copy editors and page designers — plus uses content from sister publications and wire services to provide coverage of primarily high school, college, professional and amateur sports.

Tasks include assigning stories, photos and graphics for upcoming and that day’s events; and planning how coverage will be displayed.

The assistant sports editor also will work with the newspaper’s online team to promote content and to alert readers to breaking news, such as final scores.

Candidates for this position, first and foremost, must have extensive knowledge of sports and the importance that readers place on its coverage.

The assistant sports editor should be good at supervising people, scheduling and working with other parts of the newsroom. Knowledge of the newspaper production process is important.

The ideal candidate will be thinking both how the print product will look and how to give eager readers that content online.

This position helps park visitors have memorable experiences in state parks and form meaningful connections to the beauty and history of Arkansas. The position will research, promote, and present formal and informal outdoor programs that may include guided hikes, amphitheater talks, kayak tours, resource-focused recreational activities, outdoor historic site tours, limited school programs, and programs for local communities. The position also assists with park operations duties as assigned, to include answering phones, camper registration, retail sales, answering visitor questions, assisting with housekeeping and maintenance, and counting inventory.

Positions will be filled at various locations around the state (specific locations listed below). Positions range in duration from 3 to 9 months. Positions begin March, April, or May and last through summer or fall depending on duration. Actual work schedules vary by park and season. All positions are considered part-time, but employees can expect a 35–40-hour work week during peak visitation season (peak varies by location). Housing is provided at some parks but is not guaranteed.

Valid driver’s license required. Must pass driving record and criminal background check. Must have physical condition sufficient to work outdoors on uneven terrain, and sometimes under strenuous conditions. Must be able to work a non-standard schedule, including weekends, holidays, and some evenings. A mandatory, paid interpretation skills training class is provided.

Minimum qualifications are at least two years of college education in a degree plan majoring in natural science, park interpretation, communications, park administration, history, education, forestry, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications are relevant work or volunteer experience, documented experience in public speaking and writing, coursework in interpretive methods, and a working knowledge of Arkansas natural/cultural history. At parks with lakes and rivers, experience and strong skills in swimming, boating, and kayaking is preferred.

Summary

The Park Specialist II is an Extra Help position responsible for providing unskilled and semi-skilled labor and/or guest services in a state park. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Functions

Performs duties such as patron assistance, lifeguarding, desk clerking, grounds and facility maintenance, guiding tours, cooking, food preparation, administrative assistance, office assistance, housekeeping, facility attendance and other types of general labor or public service.

Summary

The Engineer, Professional Engineer is responsible for conducting engineering studies, developing design drawings and/or specifications, and performing related administrative duties. This position is governed by state and federal law and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Inspects sites to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and state and federal regulations during all phases of construction and/or inspects existing facilities for fire and safety code compliance and proper equipment operation. Completes reports of findings and takes necessary action to correct deficiencies. Designs, drafts, and/or reviews plans of proposed projects, reviews engineering reports, plans, and specifications for compliance with all regulations and guidelines, administers contracts, and provides engineering surveys. Reviews various permit applications for compliance with applicable laws and regulations recommending approval of denial of permits. Consults with public officials, consulting engineers, and architects concerning design recommendations and/or design modifications for projects, and responds to inquiries concerning Civil and Environmental Engineer laws and practices within the State of Arkansas. Utilizes various computer programs for data and information gathering, formula calculations, various studies and report generating and prepares written reports. Conducts meetings or attends public hearings and meetings and presents workshops to local officials providing information and explaining agency policies. Provides information, suggestions, advice and technical assistance to city, county and district officials in various practices and programs by answering questions, interpreting applicable laws and regulations and coordinating with other entities to resolve problems. May act as a team leader on projects by interviewing and recommending for hire, assigning, overseeing, and reviewing work, and training new employees. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering relating to the work performed. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing the field of engineering. Knowledge of construction plans and designs. Ability to inspect plans and/or structures to determine compliance with regulations. Ability to prepare and present technical information verbally and in writing. Ability to design and draft construction plans and write specifications.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in chemical, civil, or mechanical engineering, or a related field. Must be licensed as a registered professional engineer in accordance with ACA 17-30-302. Summary

The Family Service Worker is responsible for providing protective foster care and supportive services for abused or neglected children. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Investigates suspected child abuse and neglect complaints by making on-site visits, securing background information, and interviewing parties involved. Discusses investigative findings and observations with supervisor and recommends the opening of protective services, foster care, or supportive services cases. Intervenes in crisis situations, removes the child from the home if the situation is life threatening, and arranges for temporary placement in foster homes, group homes, or treatment facilities. Develops a case plan to establish goals, objectives, tasks and time frames for all parties involved in case. Provides counseling and guidance to clients in defining their needs, interests, and courses of action and refers clients to other professionals, agencies, services, or community resources appropriate to clients' problems. Recruits and trains families, conducts home studies and family assessments to determine appropriate child placements, and visits clients and/or foster parents on a regular basis to monitor progress toward case objectives. Documents all case work activities and developments and prepares court reports for custody hearings and presents testimony when necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.
