Asheville Emporium's mission is "to celebrate creativity and connection." We represent many artisans ranging from local to global and have partnered with many nonprofits to date. We are a small team of dedicated individuals who enjoy learning and bettering this enterprise together. Heidi Swann-our founder received "Small Business Leader of the Year Award for 2018" from the Asheville Chamber of Commerce. On a typical day, we have 100-400 visitors to our store.
Position Outline
• greet customers as they enter
• engage through conversation and honest recommendations with customers to further sales
• maintain facility in a clean and organized manner
• process sales transactions accurately and efficiently
• provide concise area information to guests
• process incoming merchandise and clothing, restock as needed
• light cleaning duties
• key-holder open/closing duties
• other duties as needed
Job Requirements:
• friendly, self motivated, honest and conscientious
• 1 year retail sales experience preferred
• excellent communication skills and ability to interact with public
• knowledge of Asheville's cultural highlights and amenities
• ability to work a flexible schedule that included some evenings and weekends.
• functional computer and software literacy
• reliable transportation
• ability to lift 35 lbs

ACADEMIC & TRADE QUALIFICATIONS / WORK EXPERIENCE: BA in Communications or equivalent work experience in this field.
The position will be based out the YMI Cultural Center located at 39 South Market Street, but will involve extensive local travel and building partnerships. Hours are primarily 9AM to 5PM, but with flexibility for alternative hours for community engagement.
Requirements: The candidate needs to be highly organized and able to multi-task in a team environment. A deep understanding of the issues affecting the social determinants of health with the ability to work with local and regional experts. Ability to present relatively complex information in public and private settings. Strong leadership and communication skills including technical writing and moderate data interpretation.
A successful candidate will apply these skills to ensure achievement of the three primary goals:
• Community Communication and Engagement in Building Consensus and Creating the Strategic Plan
• Increased Community Understanding on Issues of Equity
• Individual Access to Home Ownership and Workforce Development Services for African Americans.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
PRIMARY ACTIVITIES OF THE POSITION
• DEVELOP THE PROCESS FOR HIGH-LEVEL COMMUNITY COMMUNICATION
Ensure all residents, public and private stakeholders, and business leaders, and service coordinators build confidence and trust in themselves and each other. This position will lead a program of community communications and bring together persons from diverse areas of the city to share information and exchange ideas in a positive and productive setting. This position will undertake strong and direct outreach to build a bridge of understanding. Specific activities include:
o Establishing a working group to participate in the program.
o Disseminating best practice papers and share current program opportunities through monthly community meetings held at the YMICC;
o Hosting targeted focus-groups with African-American residents and community leaders held at YMICC;
o Developing written materials distributed through program partners, public and private facilities, and print and broadcast media.
• COMPLETE AND INSTITUTE A COVID-19 THREE-YEAR STRATEGIC EQUITY RECOVERY PLAN
Lead the effort to develop a COVID-19 Three-Year Strategic Equity Recovery Plan to model the results of community communications and help the community better understand the processes of government and other social services, especially in terms of their role and efforts. The process to develop the Plan will be monitored as a short-term result, with quarterly reports; the completion of the Plan and its implementation will a long-term result.
• DESIGN AND DEVELOP AN EQUITY WHITE PAPER SERIES TO INCREASE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Will design, develop, and distribute COVID-19 Equity White Papers working with community experts and consultants. The quarterly white papers will focus on the social determinates of health and the economy in a recovering workforce. Distribution will be through stakeholder locations, online website sites for key partners, and announcements in print and broadcast media.
• EXPAND PROGRAM PARTNERSHIPS TO FURTHER SUPPORT AFRICAN-AMERICAN HOME OWNERSHIP AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
This position will help YMICC will expand its partnership in the Asheville Chamber of Commerce’s ARPA submission regarding workforce development.
• CREATE A HYBRID MODEL FOR PARTICIPATION IN PLANNING AND PROGRAMMING – TIME AND PLACE
YMICC has designed a new “hybrid” model of program delivery and outreach through new wiring, increased bandwidth, and online attendance opportunities for programs and meetings. YMICC will also update the elevator and wheelchair lifts for ADA compliance and safety.
