Role Description

ASTM International’s Exo Technology Center of Excellence (ET CoE) vision is for people of all ages able to pursue a high-quality of life and fully participate in work and society thanks to safe, reliable, and effective exoskeletons. Our mission is to accelerate exo technology research, standards, testing, certification, and training.

We are seeking an Intern to support the ET CoE’s research-to-standards and workforce development activities. This position is structured as an opportunity for the intern to grow and learn. The intern will work with ASTM management, stakeholders, and the ET CoE team in current and future projects relating to exo technologies. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone planning a career in emerging technologies. The intern will be responsible for reviewing scientific literature, coordinating meetings and events, assisting in developing workforce development products, and supporting STEM activities for students, including the Exo Games. Based on the current and anticipated quantity of this work, an intern would be required to work up to 35 hours per week.

General Responsibilities
• Basic Orientation – Learn about ASTM International and our standards programs and offerings, the purpose of these programs, and become familiar with the existing products. Learn about communication of technical knowledge to a wide variety of audiences through audio, visual, and multimedia productions.
• Technical Orientation – Gain a basic understanding of the impact of exoskeleton technologies on industry, construction, medical, and defense communities.
• Support the development of a publicly accessible form or application that can easily allow anyone to submit safety related feedback on exoskeleton products to support future standards development not the reporting of specific incidents or to mitigate risk of any particular incident.
• Support the planning and coordination of the Exo Games being held at the University of Central Lancashire in August 2023. The Exo Games is a competition open to university teams of S.T.E.M degree students, designed to connect them with exo industry professionals, help them build lifelong relationships, and get hands-on experience with new exo standards.
• Support STEM activities through the continued development of exoskeleton kits in partnership with the exoskeleton student chapter at UCLan.
• Produce a review of literature of exoskeleton research around the world and share with the exoskeleton standards committee members.

Key Requirements
• Pursuing a bachelor’s, or graduate degree, in a science, technology, or engineering field
• Experience with exoskeletons, robotics, cobots, AI, mechatronics, coding, rehabilitation devices, or similar technologies

Role Description:

The Meetings Department, Technical Committee Operations Intern at ASTM International will be a contributing member of the Meetings Department team, with responsibilities to include Meetings Data management, creating or editing meeting templates for various meeting types, working on a team converting our Meeting Room booking process from manual to digital and updating Aventri Registration & Event Management Software. The intern will gain valuable experience working in a nonprofit, membership-based organization with over 175 Meetings annually around the globe.

ASTM OnDemand Solutions offers individual and business customers a wide array of technical eLearning content. ASTM OnDemand Solutions utilizes SABA as the primary Learning Management System (LMS) for individual sale and our smaller B2B customers. Our catalog of eLearning courses has increased dramatically over the last two years and the need to improve the information, navigation, and discoverability within the system is growing. The chosen candidate will take charge of initiatives to improve the LMS experience from a customer perspective. Alongside this work, the intern will also support the eLearning development team in continuous improvement including quality assurance and feedback on iterations of visual design improvements.

This internship will be an enriching experience for the chosen individual; they will work with ASTM training team members, stakeholders, designers, and developers. Role Description

Objectives

The intern will be a junior member of the Finance & Accounting team, and will be responsible for various projects, including, but not limited to the following:
• Assisting the accounting staff with the further development of templates, using advanced Excel skills, to achieve the department’s goal of “improved reporting and data analytics”.

Role Description

The ASTM Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) has multiple positions available for an internship within our Global R&D team. Internships would be able to work on range of topics which can be tailored to their background, experience, and interests. The key programs which could be supported include:
• Consortium for Materials Data and Standardization: This industry led consortium focuses on the creation and development of high caliber datasets for AM Material. There are over 25 members currently, and internships could support across such disciplines as Data Science, Materials, or Quality.
• Advisory Services:Internships would support technical engineering projects within AM CoE. This includes working on current projects (can be tailored to intern experiences and interests) such as:
• Directed Energy Deposition material dataset generation.
• Relating the effects of defects in AM material to component lifing for structural integrity.
• Supporting literature reviews for various applications in AM and Advanced Manufacturing.
• Business Development: Internships would support ongoing Business Development work, including supporting proposal writing, stakeholder mapping, and identification of potential funding opportunities. This would build on previous work from previous successful internships.
• Data Management: Internship will support reviewing the literature to identify subject matter experts (SMEs) and invite speakers to present on establishing process-structure-property relationships in AM. This effort will directly support the development of Data Management roadmap for the ASTM CMDS, while identifies future members of the consortium to address technical gaps. Internships can also support coordination of the TechTalk (Lunch-n-Learn) sessions at the AM CoE.

Learning Experience

Due to the nature of the work at the AM CoE, the intern would be a key member of the Global R&D team. The intern will engage with both internal AM CoE stakeholders, with the position offering the opportunity to foster both technical and project management skills. In addition, the intern will gain knowledge of high caliber quality management methodologies and tools tailored for AM specific needs. The intern will also gain experience in multiple project management and productivity tools.

General Responsibilities
• Orientation – Learn about Additive Manufacturing, Standards, Project Management & how the Global R&D team operates.
• Learn about ASTM programs and offerings, the purpose of these programs, and be familiar with the existing products.
• Support the Global R&D team with project delivery.

Key Requirements
• Rising Junior or Senior, pursuing a Degree in Relevant field of study and applicable course completion in a specific discipline.
• Flexibility, self-motivation, and the ability to give and receive feedback at all levels are required.
• Questioning attitude – both technically and from a business perspective.

Time Requirements

35 hours per week, May/June through August. 

Compensation: $18.00 / Hour
