As a Primate Keeper, you will bring specialist expertise and skills and will work as part of a team responsible for the daily husbandry and management of the primate collection.

We are looking for 2 people in this round of recruitment.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in the development of the Zoo's primate section, to actively contribute to conservation both in the zoo and in the field, to work with some of the world's most extraordinary... primates, and to provide exciting visitor experiences, which inspire and empower people to take positive action for wildlife and the environment.

Working on a rotating roster system including some weekends and public holidays, we are a fun and enthusiastic team, who thrive in this challenging and rewarding area and who work in innovative areas on an international level. This position reports to the Team Leader.

This is a full-time permanent role of 40 hours per week.

He kōrero mōu: About you:

To be considered for this role, you must demonstrate all the following:
• A minimum of five years’ professional experience in the best-practice husbandry of primates (Great ape experience preferable).
• Relevant bachelor’s degree and/or Certificate in Zoo Animal Management and/or relevant equivalent experience.
• Proven ability to carry out and supervise daily keeping duties to a high standard ensuring all husbandry and welfare needs are met.
• Experience in designing/leading operant training and behavioural enrichment programmes.
• Self-motivation and demonstration of good teamwork.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with experience providing exciting and engaging animal encounters.
• Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring, and coaching, staff, and the ability to effectively train colleagues in specialist skills.
• Strong organisational skills, aptitude for creative problem-solving, strong self-motivation and drive.
• Demonstrated understanding of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums strategies for Animal Welfare and Conservation.
• Sound knowledge and use of ZIMS record keeping.
• Understanding of small population biology and management.
• Current driving licence valid in NZ.

Additionally, preferred candidates would show:
• A track record of innovative husbandry and research.
• Project management experience.
• Prior research and scientific writing experience.

A high level of energy and physical fitness will enable you to meet the daily challenges of the role.

Annual salary NZD $55,182-$62,237, dependant on qualifications, skillset and experience. (Band: Keep 01 to Keep 03)

How can you make your contribution to this?

We are currently looking for our next grounds person to join the Grounds team!

Within this role you will be responsible for preparing and maintaining the zoo grounds. This includes maintaining the exterior surfaces of buildings, fixtures, signs and public areas and utilising equipment such as mowers, leaf blowers and edge trimmers.

A central part of the work also involves managing the... collection of inorganic and organic waste. This role is an essential part of the overall success of the zoo providing the best environment for our visitors, staff and animals.

This is a permanent, full-time position, working 40 hours across Tuesday to Saturday roster.

He kōrero mōu : About you

As a ground's person, you will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and positively contribute to a team environment.

You will spend the majority of the day on your feet with medium to heavy lifting from time to time, so strong stamina and a good level of fitness is essential.

You will also possess :
• Previous experience maintaining grounds is desirable
• Experience using mowers, edge trimmers, and leaf blowers
• An understanding of health and safety requirements
• Enthusiasm with a 'can-do' attitude
• NZ Divers License (manual vehicle) required
• HT desirable, but not essential

You will have good time management skills as well as the ability to meet your deadlines. Keeping an open mind and remaining flexible is essential as is a positive approach to being part of the team.

A high level of energy and physical fitness will enable you to meet the daily challenges of the role.

You will need a relevant (biological/conservation sciences) undergraduate degree or Certificate (minimum) in Zookeeping or equivalent qualification(s) and/or relevant experience in related field

To guide you further, our ideal candidate will have:
• A track record of innovative husbandry and research.
• Fieldwork experience, including at isolated locations for extended periods.
• Approx. ten (10) years’ experience within a Zoo or related industry.
• Demonstrated knowledge and minimum five (5) years’ experience with the husbandry and welfare of a range of relevant species.
• Previous practical experience within a Zoo or affiliated conservation industry
• Proven experience in a line management role, including experience of recruiting and deploying staff, managing performance and coaching and developing staff to enhance their skills and contribution
• Proven ability to lead a team, able to organise and motivate a large team and engender a sense of teamwork and common purpose
• Experience and an understanding of health and safety and security standards as they affect a large public venue
• A track record of working through others to deliver a high-quality visitor experience in a public facing environment
• Some experience in rosters, time administration and payroll systems is preferred
