The Director of Communications is responsible for all official external and internal communications from the University. Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, the Director leads a small team of content creation generalists and Avila brand specialists in the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC). The office is the primary custodian of the Avila.edu WordPress website and the main @AvilaUniversity social media accounts – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Responsibilities:

Communication Leadership
• Collaborate with the Chief Operations Officer to develop, implement, and review communications goals and strategies for promoting and growing Avila’s reputation, enrollment, fundraising, and public awareness across communities (students, parents, alumni, faculty/staff, friends and donors, and the wider Kansas City community).
• Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to achieve fundraising revenue goals.
• Lead the communication of the university’s distinctive values, strategic vision, and differentiators to ensure they are presented consistently and clearly through all external and internal messaging.
• Collaborate with and assist university leadership in their messaging to mass audiences.
• Mentor a creative team in a hybrid office environment.
• Oversee photography, video, and content creation for university projects.
• Manage the university’s resources and expectations within the department’s budget.
• Stay current with industry practices and monitor competitive marketing, communications, and earned media.

Reputation and Brand Leadership
• Provide brand support, guidance, and coordination across campus and with the university’s marketing/enrollment partners to achieve enrollment goals. OMC is the final word on the Avila brand, trademarks, and usage.
• Ownership of the Avila.edu recruitment website. With support from Avila’s web hosting/development team (off-site), OMC is the primary web administrator for updates, content creation, SEO, ADA accessibility, effectiveness, and functionality.
• Ownership of the university’s primary social media accounts. Provide guidance, support, and monitoring of the various university department/office social media accounts. Develop, implement, and review the university’s social media strategies, tactics, policies, and procedures.

Media Relations Leadership
• Foster proactive opportunities for media coverage and advance the public perception of the university through earned media.
• When necessary, act as the university’s spokesperson and the primary contact with the media.
• Lead crisis communications planning and execution.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, or Marketing
• 6 years of experience of related experience, preferably in Higher Education
• Multilingual skills highly preferred

• Plans, coordinates and manages residency weekend logistics, including venue selection, contracting, scheduling, budgeting, and on-site management.
• Recruits, vets, and engages highly qualified adjunct faculty and industry experts to teach residency weekend courses and workshops.
• Collaborates with graduate program directors to design engaging residency curricula aligned to program learning outcomes.
• Ensures excellent delivery of courses and workshops during residency weekends by managing instructors and monitoring student feedback.
• Oversees student travel, accommodations, and student life activities during residency weekends. Ensures smooth experiences.
• Maintains partnerships with various facilities and vendors to deliver high-quality residency programming in a cost-effective manner.
• Utilizes project management principles to plan, coordinate, and continuously improve residency experiences.
• Manages program budgets and ensures residency activities meet university policies and academic standards.
• Performs other duties to support residency graduate programs and advance the university's global mission.

Qualifications
• Master's degree with 3-5 years of relevant experience in program administration, event planning and project management
• Ability to collaborate with academic and operational teams
• Strong logistic coordination and on-site event management skills
• Budget management expertise
• Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
• Flexibility to travel regularly to residency sites
• Multilingual skills highly preferred.
