Project Overview:
Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States and the next large-scale lithium mine. The project has all permits required to commence construction, which is expected to start in 2023. Engineering design and procurement of long-lead equipment is underway, with early works being coordinated.
This project falls under the Lithium Americas umbrella of Lithium Nevada Corporation (LNC). Project site is located ~3 hours northeast of Reno at the southern end of the McDermitt Caldera in Humboldt County, NV, and ~25 miles from the Nevada-Oregon border (or ~1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, NV).
The Project will be developed as an open-pit mining operation using conventional, continuous mining equipment. Given the soft, clay nature of the deposit, minimal blasting and crushing is anticipated. The ore will then be processed in a leaching circuit using sulfuric acid to liberate the lithium from the claystone. Following the leaching process, the lithium bearing solution will be purified using crystallizers and reagents to produce battery-quality Li2CO3.
The Thacker Pass site has a flat and expansive terrain which allows for a very compact footprint and for future potential expansions.
Bechtel will have responsibility for the full EPC/EPCM scope.
Position Summary:
• Plans and conducts independent work within a global business unit requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.
• Devises new approaches to solving problems.
• Broad working knowledge of precedents in the specialty area, the principles and practices of related technical areas and of coordinating work with other technical disciplines.
• Plans and coordinates independent work requiring judgment and experience in the application and substantial adaptation of engineering techniques.
• Devises new approaches to technical problems.
• Knowledgeable of and performs standard discipline engineering activities on projects of relatively small size and complexity within the business line with minimal technical oversight.
• Coordinates technical issues with other departments on projects including constructability requirements and reviews.
• Provides technical direction for specific tasks and assigns work to subordinate senior engineers, engineers, designers, drafters or project sub-groups.
• Broad knowledge of precedents in the industry.
Responsibilities:
• Responsibilities will include project assignments, proposal preparation and corporate activities. Applicants should have a solid background of design engineering, covering all likely plant communication systems, e.g. point-to-point transmission systems, satellite links, microwave radio, optical fibre cabled systems, SCADA, mobile radio, telephone, IT networks, public address, CCTV, emergency control and safety systems, security systems.
• Responsible for the technical leadership and design of the systems. Candidates should have held lead positions of key responsibility and have direct hands-on experience in project execution from conceptual design, feasibility studies and front-end design activities to detailed design.
Qualifications and Skills:
Basic Skills:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering or related discipline.
• Professional Engineer (Chartered Eng or equivalent) desired.
• Good oral communicator with excellent grammatical writing capability.
Preferred Skills:
• Experience of negotiating with public authorities, PTTs and of participation with standards forming bodies would be useful.
• Commercial astuteness and leadership skills are important attributes.
• Candidates will also be an effective administrator, possess key project planning, scheduling and controls skills.
