What's the role?

Bloomberg's Global Public Policy team is responsible for leading engagement with Government and Regulatory authorities in relation to policy formation impacting Bloomberg and our clients and leading the firm's external climate finance initiatives. Our team builds and maintains a broad network of partners and key decision makers - including clients, policymakers, and regulators - which we convene regularly to constructively feed into policy making processes and climate finance initiatives.

As part of this work, the Global Public Policy team leads the Secretariat for the Climate Finance Leadership Initiative (CFLI). The CFLI, formed by Michael R. Bloomberg at the request of the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, convenes leading companies to mobilize and scale private capital for climate solutions in emerging markets. We also coordinate closely with the other key divisions of External Relations, Bloomberg Core Business, Bloomberg Philanthropies as well as Legal and Compliance.

We are looking for a new member to join our team, specifically to support the Executive Director of Climate Finance Initiatives, based in New York City! You're confident in handling a wide range of administrative and executive support-related tasks. You're used to maintaining effective lines of communication, keeping managers fully informed of all critical issues, but confident in making quick decisions and thinking on your feet. You are reliable, dedicated, organized, independent and very detail oriented. You feel comfortable communicating and interacting at senior levels, both internally and externally, and understand the need to uphold discretion in all matters. If you thrive in our dynamic and challenging environment, working on international programs, are resourceful, efficient and at ease with juggling shifting priorities, we would love to speak to you.

We'll trust you to:
• Play a strategic role ensuring the Executive Director's time is used as effectively as possible, managing meetings, logistics and travel to ensure the success and efficiency of the initiative
• Arrange domestic and international travel with attention and care to all logistics, including being available to the Executive Director during duration of travel
• Run all administrative logistics and aspects related to this role
• Track and submit business-related expenses via the Bloomberg expense management tool and with respect to the Executive Director's outside business travel
• Prepare and consolidate meeting agendas, briefing memos and documents ahead of time
• Complete tasks, assignments and projects in a timely manner. Work independently, prioritize critical tasks - often with little direct supervision
• Develop talking points, conduct high-level background research on topics of interest, deep dives on relevant technical areas, to support the development of briefing materials
• Support event logistics including preparing content for external/public meetings (e.g., events/roundtables/etc.) such as agendas and concept notes
• Create, edit and proofread general communications (e.g., presentations, memos) on behalf of the Executive
• Exercise professional demeanor and attitude. Uphold confidentiality in regard to the team, business and employees

You'll need to have:
• 5+ years of experience as an Executive Assistant*
• Bachelor's degree
• A strong interest in building the skills and background to grow in the field of climate finance
• Experience as an Assistant or Coordinator supporting more than one manager simultaneously within an organization
• Proven knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (including formulas)
• Demonstrated effective communication with both internal and external stakeholders
• Outstanding writing and editing skills with proven experience with both long form research documents, in addition to short technical memos
• Strong collaborator who understands the complexity of entertaining multiple audiences and navigating their diverse interests and goals
• Excellent organizational abilities and can balance multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
• The ability to balance immediate and long-term priorities
• Strong critical thinker with deep attention to detail
• Proactive problem solver
• Please note we use years of experience as a guide, but we will certainly consider applications from all candidates who are able to demonstrate the skills necessary for the role.

Bloomberg's CTO Office is the future-looking technical and product arm of Bloomberg L.P. We envision, design, and prototype the next generation infrastructure, hardware, and applications for the Bloomberg Terminal. Our projects include machine learning-powered products, cloud computing infrastructure and strategy, open source stewardship, natural language processing, and more. We are... passionate about what we do.

Overview:

We believe that large language models (LLMs) will play a very important role at Bloomberg for the foreseeable future. As an LLM Training Researcher, you will be our resident expert on cutting-edge training strategies for LLMs. Specifically, your focus will be on optimization (e.g. training stability, optimizer choice, learning rate schedules, regularization, batching, float representations), details of architecture choice and objective functions, data-preprocessing (e.g. tokenization and de-duplication strategies), fine-tuning strategies and anything else that would have a material impact on model performance. You will lead our research into these areas, and you will collaborate with our talented ML researchers in the Engineering division on building LLMs. You may also develop and leverage collaborations and partnerships with external service providers, where they can substantially accelerate our progress.

The ideal candidate will have practical experience training state-of-the-art LLM models as well as a strong publication record in the field. They will have excellent collaboration skills that will enable them to work with stakeholders across the organization and responsively address emerging business challenges. They are expected to serve as a representative for the office of the CTO internally to engineering teams and externally to academic partners and industry counterparts. Bloomberg values our deep engagement in academic conferences and in the open-source community, and an ideal candidate would lead our efforts in both spaces. An ideal candidate will thrive in an environment where they can develop a strategic vision and see it realized through their technical expertise, focus, and partnership across the organization.

We'll trust you to:
• Establish and continually refine our internal best practices for LLM training
• Collaborate with engineers on building state-of-the-art LLM models
• Stay abreast of the latest research in LLM training and design strategies
• Lead research efforts on LLM training, deliver scientific breakthroughs and share these findings at top conferences and through other publication channels
• Form strategic partnerships with external providers to accelerate our technological advancement

You'll need to have:
• 5+ years of experience in an applied research role
• Ph.D. or equivalent experience in training LLMs
• Several publications on LLMs or related technologies (e.g. underlying optimization theory)
• Excellent communication and collaborative skills
• Blend of long-term strategic vision with goal-driven tactical focus
• Engagement with the research community (e.g., conference or workshop service).

Nice to have:
• Understanding of parallelization strategies for large-scale LLM training
