Description

The Belleville News-Democrat is looking for an energetic, enterprising reporter who thrives on accountability journalism and can deliver compelling, state government and political coverage through a Southern Illinois lens...

Our award-winning newsroom has a reputation for breaking news and producing exclusive accountability journalism that focuses on a region known as the metro-east, right across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. Our coverage reflects daily life in the metro-east, spotlighting issues people care about, finding solutions and making a difference, all the reasons you got into journalism.

At the Belleville News-Democrat, our state affairs and politics reporter is expected to act as our readers’ watchdog, breaking news that holds our region’s legislators, other public officials and state agencies accountable. You’ll tell readers whether elected representatives are doing their jobs and keeping their promises and whether the region is getting a return on its tax dollars.

Our state affairs and politics reporter deeply explores issues from a Southern Illinois perspective, explains how they directly affect our readers’ lives and where appropriate, writes about possible solutions to problems. A key element of this coverage is to regularly engage readers to find out what’s important to them.

Much of this reporter’s politics coverage focuses on state legislative and congressional races. We aren’t interested in ``horse race” political coverage. Rather, this reporter asks readers to identify important issues and shapes most of our politics coverage around those topics.

We count on The Associated Press and Capitol News Illinois to provide nuts and bolts daily coverage of the legislature and statewide politics, while the BND’s reporter focuses on producing compelling, broader enterprise stories that are essential to Southern Illinois readers.

The metro-east, our core coverage area, is also a great place to live and work. You get the benefits of small-town living in Illinois with thriving Main Streets, restaurants, festivals and community picnics, plus easy access to all the amenities of St. Louis just minutes away. The city has a lively, diverse music scene, great restaurants, bars and craft breweries, topnotch professional sports, a wonderful zoo and museums,a top-ranked botanical garden and a world-class symphony orchestra, just to name a few. BND journalists also enjoy the rich outdoor life in our region, from Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois to the Mississippi flyway and so much more in between.

The state affairs and politics reporter is based in our Belleville newsroom, with occasional travel to our state capitol and around Illinois.

Responsibilities

We expect the successful candidate to be able to meet many, but not necessarily all, of these qualifications, job requirements and responsibilities
• A commitment to accuracy and journalism ethics
• Strong writing and reporting skills and excellent news judgment
• The ability to produce a healthy mix of daily and longer term enterprise
• A commitment to regularly include readers in your reporting, from identifying story ideas to being part of a diverse network of sources
