As a new non-profit, we are seeking an experienced... nonprofit professional with excellent communications, development, project management, and partnership skills to work on a contract basis in a hybrid role of fundraising and executive leadership to get us to the next stage, from early fundraising success to a more systematic approach, largely focused on corporate donors, with some attention to charitable foundations.
The position of Executive Director (contract role) is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and entrepreneurial nonprofit professional to help advance the organization’s mission and elevate its profile; research and secure funding from private, corporate, academic, and government sources; help us strengthen our partnerships with sites on the Trail; and communicate the value and image of the Innovation Trail to the larger community.
The successful candidate will have a strong track record of grant gift solicitation through exceptional writing, personal outreach, and relationship-building; a solid understanding of corporate and foundation funding; project management skills; experience organizing in-person events and meetings; understanding of marketing and communications strategy; and the ability to serve as a passionate and articulate ambassador for the Innovation Trail.
Compensation and Hours
$6000/month (flexible schedule, 3-4 days per week). This is a contractor role at present.
Work from your home office, or in an innovation space in Kendall Square. Candidates must be located in the Greater Boston area and be able to participate in occasional in-person meetings and events; many meetings will take place virtually.

Principal Responsibilities
• Represent the organization effectively to multiple organizations, working closely with co-founders
• Strategize and work with the two co-founders and Board Treasurer to create approaches and proposals for companies, individual givers, and potential public grant funding.
• Identify potential corporate and foundation giving prospects
• Draft proposals and solicitation letters to companies and individuals
• Manage any grants and grant reports
• Working with Boston tourism organizations in helping tour participation (guided and self-guided) to grow
• Maintain active communications with donors about accomplishments
• Help to manage the successful follow-up to proposals
• Work with Treasurer and the two Co-Founders on the database (currently Bloomerang) so that it can track accurately where proposals are, and the latest communications with donors
• Where necessary, communicate with sites on the Trail about maps, signage, and marketing issues
• Help with social media and advertising strategy
• Build collaborative relationships and communicate effectively across the organization
• Identify new major donors and cultivate relationships with an expanded donor base
• Engage and educate the Board on appropriate foundation and related fundraising
• Oversee development of educational materials for school tours
• Help evolve the organization into a healthy "steady state"
• Lead work on developing signage for Trail.
Position Requirements
• Excellent writer, knowledgeable in seeking funding from grant-making agencies and other forms of support.
• Seasoned fundraiser with a minimum of five years of progressively increasing responsibilities and a track record of successful fundraising from major local and and sources such as higher education, nonprofit organizations, associations, government, corporate foundations, and other areas.
• A background securing funds in history, science, innovation, technology, or education is desirable.
• Good team player and resourceful problem solver; ability to promptly identify, analyze, and address conflicts, obstacles, or other issues with creative, collaborative solutions.
• Ability to navigate and get results from complex organizational structures.
• Entrepreneurial mindset.
Innovation Trail Objectives
• Help to elevate Boston’s brand and global awareness of the city as the most innovative U.S. city over time.
• Inspire future generations of scientists, entrepreneurs, and pioneers to create, innovate, and discover.
• Create a “front door” for visitors interested in medicine, technology, or social innovation — from prospective college and graduate school students to conventioneers and visitors here for business meetings as well as a wide variety of local residents. Present our story in a coherent and compelling way, while driving additional traffic to the museums that are part of the Trail.
The Organization & Its Leadership
The organization is led by the two founders: Boston Globe "Innovation Economy” columnist and author Scott Kirsner, and not-for-profit leader, innovation history author, and professor Dr. Bob Krim, who began developing the Innovation Trail in summer 2021 with a group of supporters. They gathered 30 local leaders from STEM-oriented museums (e.g. Museum of Science, MGH’s Museum of Medical History, etc.), historical organizations, hotels, tourism groups, as well as Boston public relations and marketing professionals as an advisory council called the “Charter Catalysts.” The Trail has attracted early financial support from a wide range of organizations, including SVB, the Cambridge Office for Tourism, the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District, and Meet Boston (formerly the Greater Boston Visitors and Convention Bureau), among others.
