The ideal candidate should be adept at analyzing complex data, undaunted by having doors slammed in their face, skilled at storytelling and – most importantly – have an unyielding drive to produce journalism that makes a mark.

This person should have a keen eye for story ideas, the ability to envision an ambitious investigation, and the reporting chops to carry it out. They should be able to write clearly and forcefully.

We are looking for someone who is dogged in uncovering information that others want to keep secret, while also holding a deep sense of fairness and compassion. The Spotlight Team is a highly collaborative environment, so candidates should be skilled communicators and have a history of success when working with others.

Responsibilities:
• Pitch, report, and produce high-level accountability journalism on a variety of topics and audiences
• Collaborate closely with other reporters and editors, including visual, audio, and video colleagues
• Assist in efforts to gain access to information that others try to keep secret, which includes filing a steady stream of records requests, developing sources, and more

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher and at least five years of reporting experience
• A proven track record of accountability work, including stories that have directly led to action or change
• Strong news judgment, with a sharp eye for issues, topics, or trends that demand deeper investigations
• An accountability mindset, an imbued sense of skepticism, and – when needed – a sense of outrage. Our guiding principle is impact.
• The ability to envision and execute on ambitious projects
• Digital acumen – from SEO in headlines to writing scripts for audio/video. You should be comfortable helping push your journalism in a variety of ways and on different platforms.
• A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

Please send a resume, cover letter, and links/details to at least three accountability stories you’ve worked on.
