Vice President Kamala Harris, a former California senator, is a possible rival. And there is a hotly contested race in 2024 to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein. When not covering campaigns, you’ll also explore the politics behind state policy decisions as dominant Democrats wrestle with major, contentious decisions about housing and homelessness, technology, climate change and inequality. CalMatters produces vivid, original multimedia journalism and data-driven news analyses that appear daily on our website and are distributed for free to more than 250 media partners statewide. You’ll join a supportive, diverse staff of 60+ people across the state and a small award-winning team of Capitol reporters.
This position is based within regular commuting distance of Sacramento and requires frequent work at the Capitol covering state lawmakers.
Responsibilities include:
• Report and write state-focused political stories in a variety of formats, including in-depth longform, smart enterprise, data-rich card deck explainers, concise newsletter items and occasional breaking news.

In 2026, coverage will also include the contest for a new governor and other state constitutional offices. Stories should be attuned to statewide patterns and include candidate qualifications, stances on vital issues, the role of money, political alliances, campaign tactics and more.
• Help create CalMatters’ go-to online Voter Guide.

• Contribute to our story production, including work with our CMS, creating data graphics and using SEO best practices.
Required:
• At least three years of professional journalism experience, preferably including coverage of politics and the policy-making process.
• Sharp writing skills, with work samples that showcase the ability to engage readers and translate politics into relatable, human stories that tell our audience why it matters.
Strongly preferred:

• Deep familiarity with the state’s diverse communities
• Skilled in campaign finance collection and analysis
• The ability to report and write in English and Spanish.

If you’re a journalist inspired to follow stories about the impact of climate change and what California is doing to try to slow its effects, then you may be the next environment reporter at CalMatters — an award-winning and influential nonprofit, multimedia news venture focused on covering the cutting-edge state of California.
California is a global leader on climate change with unprecedented... policies to electrify transportation by 2035 and be carbon neutral by 2045. The policies will change the life of every Californian and be a powerful demonstration for the rest of the world about how the fifth largest economy is going green. They also pose difficult questions for a Democratic state, navigating between the high cost of many climate policies and a population with the nation’s highest poverty rate. In this role you’ll track state regulations and their impact on Californians, the environment and the economy, master the politics of the issues, analyze data and travel frequently. You’ll produce stories that communicate to a broad audience what’s happening and why it matters to them. We’re seeking someone committed to holding state policymakers accountable as they struggle to address what our former governor termed “an existential crisis.”
CalMatters produces vivid, original multimedia journalism and data-driven news analyses that appear daily on our website and are distributed freely to more than 250 media partners statewide. You’ll be joining a supportive, diverse staff of 60+ across the state and a small environmental team that includes one Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and another who recently won a first place for beat reporting from the Society of Environmental Journalists. And you’ll report to an editor who has covered enviro policy for several decades and has won multiple national awards.
This position is based in either Sacramento or the Bay Area; while remote work is allowed, the reporter will need to be in Sacramento frequently to cover actions of the governor, Legislature and state agencies.
Responsibilities include:
• Report and write climate and related environmental stories in a variety of formats, including in-depth longform, smart enterprise, data-rich card deck explainers and occasional breaking news.
• Collaborate on inventive packages that may include video, audio and data interactives.
• Contribute to regular brainstorming sessions with ideas that create understanding about the problems and the solutions that can make a difference.

Strongly preferred:

• Science training/background
• Skills in data collection and analysis

If you’re a seasoned investigative reporter with exceptional skill at public record requests, data analysis, source development, navigating court cases, turning complexity into compelling narrative and tirelessly checking under every rock, you’re going to love this job doing deep-dive work about the state of California.
Follow the money? California has a $286 billion budget and it received $657... billion in federal COVID assistance. Billions were spent on no-bid contracts to questionable vendors including a $1.7 billion renewal for a problem-plagued company. Meanwhile, the state’s troubled Employment Development Department acknowledged at least $20 billion in fraudulent uninsurance claims. And the state’s dysfunctional licensing process left nursing home residents vulnerable to troubled owners. And that’s just what we’ve reported recently. This state requires much more accountability journalism to reveal important stories with high stakes for public cost and the well-being of Californians.

Our senior investigative reporter will work with a growing I-team at CalMatters that has already won awards for work on unseized guns and extreme incarceration. The team is also supported by our data team and a Pulitzer Prize winning editor. Responsibilities for the job include:

• Extensive use of court records, public documents and public record requests as well as work with the state budget, legislative records and other state documents.

If you have experience editing in-depth projects that involve public record requests, document searches, data analysis, source development and legal navigation, you might be the next Investigative Editor at CalMatters.
CalMatters is building an investigative team that will be a watchdog on the major issues and decisions in California. State government oversees the fifth largest economy in the... world with an annual budget that exceeds $300 billion. There is a need and opportunity for investigative journalists to explore a range of issues — the state’s K12 school system to the nation’s largest prison system, a massive infrastructure plan, world-leading climate goals, high-stakes political deals, billions of dollars to solve homelessness and more.
Our investigative team at CalMatters is supported with the best resources at Nexis and TLO, a team of data analysts and visualization producers, and expert legal assistance. It will also be complemented by a unique data tool to be built in 2023 that will use AI and bots to scour state databases and identify patterns of relationships between legislators, money, lobbyists and votes.
This is an exciting opportunity to help build and lead a team on projects that will change California and resonate across the country. Our collaborations with other newspaper, radio and television media will give these projects reach throughout the state and nation.
In seven years, CalMatters has become the largest newsroom covering California policy and politics. We’re a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, and we give our coverage at no cost to more than 180 media outlets in California. With you on the team, we’ll build on that success with deeper coverage and impactful projects.
Much of our team is in Sacramento, so that’s the ideal place for this editor, but we can be flexible for the right person.
Responsibilities include:
• Work with reporters to brainstorm, develop and produce in-depth projects that follow the money, explore political deals, assess program performance and reveal the human impact of government failures.
• Be part of the newsroom management team, developing story plans, maintaining calendars, coordinating with other staffers and freelancers, setting and evaluating goals, and managing expenses.
• Be a newsroom leader on our investigative tools including Nexis, data and public record requests.
• Work with CalMatters staff so stories are placed on radio and television as well as social media and, at times, public events.
• With help from our production team, produce editorial packages in our WordPress publishing system with photos, graphics and high quality display.

CalMatters, launched seven years ago, is an award-winning nonprofit, nonpartisan news venture dedicated to explaining the policy and politics of America’s biggest state and the world’s fifth largest economy. We produce vivid, original journalism and data-driven news analyses and watchdog reporting that’s distributed to more than 250 media partners on calmatters.org and NPR partners statewide.
Compensation and Benefits
The base salary for this position is $120,000 per year; higher compensation may be available for someone with advanced skills and/or experience.
CalMatters offers a complete benefits package with medical, dental and vision insurance – we cover 90% of the cost for employees and 70% for dependents – from a range of HMO and PPO providers. We’ll match contributions of up to 4% of your salary to our 401(k) program, provide life insurance at no cost, and give you an allowance for personal use of your cell phone and a budget for professional development opportunities like classes and conferences.
We are an expanding and collaborative newsroom, successfully forging a new model for sustainable, intelligent, nonprofit journalism. We’re committed to reflecting the people of the state we serve and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply. If you’re interested, please provide a resume and a cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
If you have trouble with this form or prefer to apply by email, write to jobs@calmatters.org with the job title in the subject line.

This is one of the most important beats in California and the single largest segment of the state budget. For a reporter... it’s an opportunity to reveal the politics and interests behind state education policy, to evaluate how major state programs are working and to hold educators and policymakers accountable. It’s a beat that will range from the California Capitol to district-level comparisons, classrooms and students.
Among critical issues facing our public schools: how to close persistent achievement gaps; how to remedy lost learning, chronic absenteeism, declining enrollment and other consequences of remote learning during the pandemic; and how to ensure that the state’s expansion of transitional kindergarten is working as intended.
Responsibilities include:
• Report and write longform enterprise and investigations, shorter breaking new stories and multimedia presentations about California education issues with close attention to state policies and legislation, the lobby community and advocates.
• Follow district and school examples that illustrate relevant responses to statewide issues.
• Think creatively about formats and tools for communicating issues to a broad, statewide audience.
• Appeal to a broad audience in a big, diverse state with keen awareness about social and cultural distinctions and story sources that reflect our population.
• Participate in audio reporting, radio shows, public events and live video.
• Work with our data, visual and social media journalists to maximize engagement.
Required:
• Minimum of three years’ of professional reporting experience beyond college, ideally including coverage of California K-12 education and the policy-making process.
• Sharp writing skills, with work samples that showcase the ability to engage readers and translate complex education issues into relatable, human stories.
• Based in Sacramento or able to travel to the Capitol frequently
Preferred:
• The ability to interview in English and Spanish
• Deep familiarity with California and its diverse communities
• Skills in data collection and analysis
Compensation and Benefits:

Do you want to help shape the future of California journalism by mentoring a new, diverse generation of reporters? The CalMatters College Journalism Network (CJN) is looking for an experienced editor who can work with our team of student reporters to craft compelling stories about how higher education policy affects students across California.
Launched in 2020, the CJN is known for its... innovative, collaborative reporting model. We recruit student journalists to participate as paid Fellows in one of the two sessions we host each year in the spring and fall. The students cover higher education from the ground up, while the CJN program provides training to students, particularly those from backgrounds underrepresented in newsrooms. Our stories are published by CalMatters and shared with our 200 media partners throughout the state.
You will report to our managing editor and work with our assistant editor for higher education coverage. You will also manage a part time program manager who is available to help with student instruction and training, recruiting and editing. In the near future, we plan to add an additional editor(s) so we can expand the number of students served by CJN.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
A capable and insightful editor with experience in both long- and short-form journalism, who can help take our student fellows’ work from good to outstanding. Can you whittle down a 3,000-word opus to a pithy 1,500 words? Talk a student through an encounter with a nervous source or a quest for public records? That’s the skillset we’re looking for. You should be well-versed in the possibilities of digital media; bonus points for multimedia skills (audio, video, data, graphics), investigative reporting chops and/or experience working with student journalists.
A strong believer in elevating student voices, within both our coverage and our mini-newsroom. Our reporting process is collective, driven by the fellows’ interests and expertise about their own campuses. We’re looking for an empathetic player-coach who will help build the CJN community and serve as a mentor for our fellows.
Responsibilities include:
• Run a team of student reporters — hosting weekly meetings, developing story ideas and coaching fellows through the reporting process
• Edit stories produced by your team, packaging them and publishing them in our WordPress system
• Set editorial direction for the network in collaboration with the program manager and, in the future, other CJN editors.
• Mentor fellows, ensuring that they are on track to reach their goals and feel supported
• Work with CalMatters’ data, graphics, photography and social media teams to produce the best presentations for the biggest audiences
• Plan training for fellows in higher education policy; California politics; reporting, writing and production skills; and navigating the news industry. Identify relevant topics and communicate with guest speakers.
• Organize and manage other duties related to building the network. These include recruiting new fellows or appearing in public to discuss our work.
This editor may be based anywhere in California, with occasional visits to our Sacramento headquarters as needed.

CalMatters, the nonprofit news organization that explains California to the 39 million people who live here, seeks an experienced leader for what might be the best job anywhere: Editor-in-chief. We have, in seven short years, built an aggressive, impactful newsroom making this a better place to live, engaging Californians in their own governance and holding elected officials accountable. Our work... changes laws, tells the stories of those whose voices aren’t being heard, wins awards and helps people. We’re 62 people strong with an $11 million budget.
We cover a land of extremes. Beaches and ski areas operate amid a changing climate that threatens our ways of life. Billionaires thrive in Silicon Valley and Hollywood while 30% of us live in or near poverty. We grow America’s food, but one out of every 39 Californians lives without safe drinking water.
Our legislature is dominated by Democrats while Trump won more votes here than in Texas in 2020. We are the largest newsroom covering a $300 billion state government that makes critical decisions about education, healthcare, the environment, housing, the economy, criminal justice, transportation, poverty and more. It’s our job to explain major issues for a broad audience – those who make the decisions and the people they affect – with stories that hold policy makers accountable and explain the what, how and why. And we’re not standing still.
We’re expanding our capacity for great work, with a new investigative unit, rapid expansion of audio reporting with public media stations statewide, a new California Voices section, an artificial-intelligence tool that mines data for story ideas, a growing membership program for our most engaged readers, a series of public events leading up to an ideas festival, a newly expanded California Divide team digging deeply into issues of economic inequity, and much more. That’s why California needs CalMatters. Here’s why CalMatters might need you. When we asked our staff what qualities would be most important in a new editor, we ended up with a powerfully short list:Vision: Someone who understands and respects what we’ve accomplished and can develop a clear vision of where we go from here.
Journalism: Someone with a track record of leading great journalism in a supportive, nurturing way that produces powerful, impactful stories while upholding standards of quality, helping people grow in their careers, respecting work-life balance and smartly managing performance. (The CEO threw in that last phrase. )California: Someone whose life and/or work experiences fuel a desire to cover this complex state in the ways it deserves, from hiring and leading – our team is 55% people of color but still well shy of truly representing the diversity that is California – to the ways we find sources, tell stories and reach underserved communities with our work. That’s it for requirements.
We want to cast a wide net, meeting people with a variety of experiences and career paths. If you’re the right candidate for this amazing opportunity, you’ll end up in a role that looks something like this:Leading a team of about 50 journalists working with words, images, audio, video, data and innovative publishing formats. We’re too big for you to edit every story and too small for you to be hands-off, so you’ll find the right cadence for working closely with your team. Under our current setup, which of course could change, the managing editor and several section and special-project editors report to the editor-in-chief while other editors report to the managing editor.
Representing CalMatters in media appearances and public events. Collaborating with close editorial partners such as the California Newsroom hub for public radio stations, CBS News for investigative work and some of California’s largest newspapers. Working with our product and engagement teams to bring audiences into our work in innovative ways and deliver our journalism effectively on our platforms and across our statewide network.
The salary range for this position is $175,000 to $200,000 per year, with the possibility of higher compensation through an executive bonus program tied to annual goals.
