Salary and Benefits

Salary for newly appointed GL-7 grade level Border Patrol Agents varies from $52,921 - $83,661 depending upon duty location and work schedule, including overtime. A fully trained Border Patrol Agent may be eligible up to an additional 25% of base pay in accordance with the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014.

Candidates with at least one (1) year of law enforcement experience and/or certain military backgrounds may qualify at the GL-9 grade level and make $59,021 - $95,192 depending upon exact location and work schedule, including overtime.

Agents will also receive the full package of federal employment benefits that include health and insurance plans, a generous annual and sick leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan akin to a traditional 401(k) offering.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA) you will be part of our 60,000+ workforce that strives to protect the American people by safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation’s economic prosperity.

Typical activities include:
• Detecting, preventing, and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers of noncitizens at or near the land borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions.
• Responding to electronic sensor alarms.
• Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence.
• Using infrared scopes during night operations.
• Responding to aircraft sighting and other anti-smuggling activities.
• Performing farm and ranch checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
• Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways and using a variety of Government assets for the accomplishment of the USBP Mission. These assets may include, but are not limited to vehicles, horses, vessels, watercrafts, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.

Qualifications:

You qualify for the GS-7 grade level if you possess one of the following:

Experience: One year of specialized work experience that shows you have the skills necessary to make sound judgments and decisions; to deal effectively with people in a courteous and tactful manner; to analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions and apply these skills in a law enforcement capacity such as training others, managing finances, code enforcement, doing compliance work, corrections, security, military, emergency responders, etc.;

OR Education Substitution for the GL-7 grade level: A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average (i.e., GPA of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0), or (3) honor society membership. Or will receive a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. Or one full year of graduate level education in a field of study related to law enforcement (e.g., criminal justice, homeland security, justice studies, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, forensic technology, forensic psychology, or corrections and rehabilitation) from an accredited college or university within 9 months from the closing date of this announcement.

OR a Combination of Experience and Education: This will be calculated using your resume and official or unofficial transcripts submitted with your application.

You qualify for the GS-9 grade level if you possess the following experience:

Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health Cumberland Plateau Health District (CPHD) seeks applicants for the Business Manager A position based at the Tazewell County Health Department with duties at the Buchanan County Health Department.

This position will provide direct supervision of district administrative support and housekeeping staff located at the Tazewell and Buchanan County Health Department within the CPHD. The person in this position will be responsible for scheduling of administrative staff, performance evaluation of administrative staff, determination of training needs, assuring staff have access to needed training, and addressing performance issues should they arise. Responsible for the administrative operations of the two county health departments including, but not limited to: participation in program planning, implementation and operations; assuring that the district, agency and state guidelines are adhered to in areas including eligibility determination, registration, HIPAA compliance and confidentiality, records retention (including confidential records destruction), third party reimbursement processing, accounts payable, accounts receivable (at the individual office staff performance level); building leases for both offices; procurement; travel reimbursement; as well as employee and program evaluation and assurance of adherence to general accounting best practices. Responsible for facilities management, both oversight of physical plant (reporting/assuring needed repairs, assuring that preventive and restorative maintenance is performed, etc.) and will supervise the housekeeping staff in both locations; will maintain repair logs, maintain preventive maintenance logs, and test fire and other alarms, assure functional security systems (and report if not), within the entire Cumberland Plateau Health District and other related responsibilities. Will maintain inventory (controllable property and FAACS inventories of equipment) and oversee annual inventory process, including annual surplus requirements. As requested, may assist the Chief Operations Officer with other daily operations. Assist leadership staff to collect, compile and analyze financial data for business needs assessment, supports implementation of programs as well as assists with program planning and execution. Responsible for ordering, processing procurement utilizing the state eVA procurement system and for received and related invoices, and the preparation of accounting vouchers for payment/SPCC payment processes. In addition, the candidate completes monthly Voucher Register reconciliation.

Salary and Benefits

You will begin your career as a GL-9 grade level Marine Interdiction Agent (MIA) and make $59,021 to $76,154 per year depending upon exact location and work schedule, including overtime. Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP), locality pay adjustments and recruitment incentives for certain locations will further increase actual entry salary level to $75,000 or more, depending upon location.

Agents will also receive the full package of federal employment benefits that include health and insurance plans, a generous annual and sick leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan akin to a traditional 401(k) offering.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Marine Interdiction Agent, you will perform marine-based law enforcement operations for the detection, prevention, interdiction, and apprehension of terrorists, terrorist weapons, and other contraband and persons from illegally entering or attacking the United States.

Typical duties include:
• Monitoring behavior patterns and activities of suspect persons, vehicles, or vessels believed to be engaged in illegal activities.
• Interpreting radar data to calculate appropriate intercept while tracking vessels and people to a successful interdiction.
• Searching persons, vessels, baggage, and cargo for contraband or weapons incidental to detention or arrest.
• Collecting, refining, and analyzing strategic and tactical intelligence.

Duty Locations:

Offers are made based on operational needs and requirements and are determined by the U.S. Border Patrol. Current locations include Long Beach and San Diego, CA; Key Largo, Key West, Marathon, and Miami, FL; Port Aransas, TX; Fajardo, Mayaguez and Ponce, PR; Saint Thomas, VI

Qualifications:

This MIA GL-9 position has a selective factor that must be met to meet minimum qualifications:

As a minimum qualification requirement all candidates must submit a valid, legible copy of your U.S Coast Guard-issued Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), dated within the last 5 years (or a MMLD with an accepted application status) and showing expiration date and capacity pages, at the time of application. Qualifying capacities include: OUPV, Mate of 200 gross tons or greater (Inland, Great Lakes, Near Coastal or Oceans), Chief Mate, Second Mate, and Third Mate Unlimited Oceans, or Master of 25 GRT or greater (Inland, Great Lakes, Near Coastal or Oceans).

In addition to the above mandatory Merchant Marine Credentials requirement, you qualify for the MIA GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower MIA grade level, performing duties such as:
• Enforcing laws, effecting arrests, and conducting interviews and interrogations with witnesses and suspects
• Performing surveillance, writing reports detailing activities and observations
• Collecting and securing evidence and providing expert testimony in court

OR Education: A master's or equivalent graduate degree, or two (2) full years of graduate education in a qualifying progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or a J.D. or LL.B., in a qualifying field (e.g., criminal justice, intelligence, homeland security, justice studies, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, forensic technology, and corrections and rehabilitation);

OR a Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of successfully completed post-bachelors’ education (above) and experience. This will be calculated using your resume and unofficial transcripts submitted with your application. If education is used for your qualification, official transcript will be required upon selection.

Other Requirements:

Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.

Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (includes protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.

Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the Border Patrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03.
