Positions Available

Positions and job duties will vary depending on the area of study and position/series. The Census Bureau produces quality data that help Americans better understand our country- its population, resources, economy, society and culture. We recruit students majoring in the following (but not limited to) areas of study; Economics, Statistics, Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, Sociology, Psychology, Demography, Criminal Justice, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Science, or Information Systems Management, Geography and Cartography.

Basic Qualifications
• U. S. Citizenship
• Enrolled as a degree seeking student in an accredited school
• Attending at least half-time
• 18 years or older at the time of appointment
• Must have and maintain at least a 3.0 G.P.A. throughout the entire internship

Program Completion and Conversion
• Interns may be non-competitively converted to a permanent position (or to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the degree.
• To be eligible to convert, Interns must complete a minimum of 640 hours of work prior to the completion of their degree, finish their degree or certificate requirements, and have performed their job successfully.
• Census may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement (3.5 GPA) and exceptional job performance.
• Census may credit up to 320 hours of the required 640 hours of work for comparable non-Federal internship experience in a field.

It is important to remember that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that the agency will decide to opt for conversion.

Housing

The Census Bureau does not offer housing assistance. However, the Partnership for Public Service has created a list of neighborhoods, apartments, and sublets throughout the city that are popular areas for college students and recent graduates. They have put together a starter’s guide for housing options.

Transit Subsidy

As a federal employee, you are eligible to receive a transit subsidy each month to compensate you for your travel to and from work via certain types of public transportation.

How Will You Be Evaluated

Veterans’ preference applies to selection for positions in the Pathways Programs. Candidates will be assessed based on the basic eligibility requirements.

When are selections made?

Once the hiring manager selects the student, the student coordinator will make the offer and will provide information on the orientation schedule. Orientations days (starts dates) may be at the beginning of each new pay period. Due to the volume of applications, only applicants who are selected for internships will be notified. This seasonal Creel Clerk will collect statistically reliable data to be used for the estimation of fishing pressure, catch, harvest, and angler demographics on Mille Lacs Lake in order to assess fisheries management actions, and angler harvest. During time periods when creel survey is not being conducted, the incumbent will assist with other office and field duties.

This seasonal position is anticipated to work March through September. The hours and days of work vary and will include weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities include:
• Perform fisheries census interviewing work by counting and interviewing anglers at selected survey sites so that estimates of fishing pressure, catch rates, and havest by species may be accurately calculated.
• Collect data on anglers' fishing experience and catch based on census design; interview them with the aid of questionnaire forms; identify, and measure fish; collect scales, fin spines, or other fish parts; and collect and document weather and water temperatures.
• Conduct interviews of anglers and gather samples of aging structures by using polite, friendly conversation and explaining the reason for the intrusion.
• Transport and utilize various equipment including a full-sized pick-up truck.
• Count angling/boating activity through observation. Answer or properly refer questions about fishing and DNR fisheries work in general by using basic DNR program and fishing knowledge.
• Enter data into an MS Access database in a timely manner.
• Assist with field work on Mille Lacs Lake as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions.

Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficient to request and accurately record information provided by anglers.

Knowledge of basic math to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers.

Math skills sufficient to count and measure.

Ability to identify common fish species.

Understanding of basic fish anatomy.

Ability to independently follow a detailed schedule for collection of data.

Word processing and typing/keyboarding skills sufficient to accurately and efficiently enter data.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate's degree in fisheries management, aquatic biology, or related field.

Basic knowledge of occupational hazards, safety requirements, and the types of personal protective equipment appropriate to carry out tasks.

Experience using Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.

Experience identifying common fish species.

Knowledge of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources fisheries policies and angling regulations.

Ability to navigate using a map, GPS, and a compass.

Experience working as a Fisheries Census Clerk or equivalent.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasionally lifting articles of 50-pounds maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough or slippery terrain and will involve sitting much of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's License with a clear driving record.
