Certiport, a Pearson VUE business, was established in 1997 and is now the leading provider of certification exam development, delivery, and program management services. The success of our exams largely depends on the knowledge and expertise of our Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). We strive to find individuals who have knowledge of the subject being tested and have worked closely with the... target audience. The largest portion of the Certiport exams is targeted at high school or early college candidates.
Location: Remote within the United States
SMEs are hired on a part-time, temporary basis. Depending on their roles, they may work on the project for one week up to four to five months. Compensation is either hourly (meetings - all roles) or by the item (item writer role).
We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be.
Responsibilities:
Subject Matter Experts (SME) have potential to fill multiple roles in the exam development cycle. The roles include, but are not limited to:
Job Task Analysis (JTA) participant - Participants in a JTA create and define the target audience, the minimally qualified candidate (MQC), the Objective Domain, and the Blueprint (the number of items per objective).
• The JTA is performed in four to five two-hour meetings - eight to ten hours total with time added or subtracted as needed. SMEs are paid hourly.
Item Writer - Using the MQC and Objective Domain documents from the JTA, item writers create the exam content following the standards defined by the Certiport Style Guide.
• One item takes approximately one hour to write. For example, if 100 items need to be created and 10 SMEs are available, then each SME would have approximately 10 hours of item writing work. Fewer SMEs increase the number of work hours.
• SMEs are usually given an assignment of 8-10 items per week until all items are written.
Technical Reviewer - All exam items are submitted to a Technical Review to ensure that every item is congruent with the assigned objective, is written to the correct cognitive level, and is written to the appropriate difficulty level of the MQC.
• On average, a 100-item bank will require seven technical reviews lasting two hours.
• The technical reviews are comprised of one CDM (Content Development Manager) and three SMEs. Different SMEs are selected for individual technical reviews to introduce different perspectives and feedback.
• SMEs are paid by the item after the item has been approved in the technical review.
• SMEs attending the Technical Reviews are paid hourly.
Standard Setting participant - Participants in the Standard Setting process rate items by difficulty and provide evaluation input to assist the psychometrician in defining a cut score and create form build documents. The Standard Setting process is divided into three actions:
• The initial training meeting which lasts 1-2 hours.
• Then all items need to be rated for difficulty individually. This action will take place on the SME's own time, outside of a meeting. Five to ten hours would be an estimate of the time needed to perform this task.
• The last step is a meeting with all the SMEs and a psychometrician to review the individual results as a whole. This final meeting may last four to eight hours and might be divided into two meetings depending on availability.
• SMEs are paid hourly.
Maintenance SME - Maintenance may be required for the exam if items aren't performing well or the concerned technology changes. SMEs are hired to review the existing Objective Domain and items to assess needed changes and perform those changes.
• The amount of time varies by the scope of the project. For instance, a SME review of the items on a 100-item bank might be as little as 10 hours, but the hours would increase if items needed to be edited or replaced.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree or higher in their area of expertise
• Certification in the concerned technology
• Three to five or more years' experience either:
• teaching the concerned technology at the elementary, high school or early college level depending on the target audience or
• using the concerned technology in their primary employment 1
• Active involvement in the educational or technical community promoting the concerned technology (study groups, contests, featured speaker, etc.) or the advancement of students in the concerned technology.
• Strong interpersonal skills to express, explore and respectfully disagree with different opinions while reviewing other people's ideas and work.
• Content development experience is a plus.
• Proficiency in multiple languages is a plus.
1 Having an approximate mix of 80% instructors and 20% industry professionals in a JTA has proven to be productive in creating an Objective Domain that matches the potential ability of the candidate while preparing them for their first or next job role.
Compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. As required by the Colorado, California, Washington State, New York State and New York City laws, the pay range for this position is as follows:
Minimum salary is $50.00 per hour.
This position is not bonus eligible nor benefits eligible.
