What we are looking for:

Charity Navigator, the world’s largest and most trusted nonprofit evaluator, seeks a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) with 15+ years experience to join its executive team and lead the technological evolution and teams for the organization. The CTO will partner with the Executive Team to create the product strategy, technological vision and strategic roadmap for the next generation of Charity Navigator’s digital products. This role requires a creative, hands-on, systems thinker able to lead teams to excel in a fast paced consumer web environment.

As more money goes to higher performing organizations, social outcomes improve. Charity Navigator’s consumer facing website receives millions of visitors annually searching for known and unknown charities across a database of 1.6 million nonprofits. We currently offer ratings for just under 200,000 charities and are continuously growing both the depth and breath of these ratings. Customer success demands an intuitive user experience for both the donor and the rated charity.

The ideal candidate is experienced across a broad range of engineering tools, technologies and platforms, with deep expertise in software architecture and modern software engineering best practices. They are passionate about building complex, enterprise-class solutions at scale. They have a compelling track record for developing, maintaining, and evolving high-demand consumer environments. This leader needs to be collaborative, practical, customer obsessed, assertive and able to function and lead teams in a lean, nonprofit environment.

Essential functions of the position include:

• Manage, maintain and improve user experience and performance of CharityNavigator.org - The nation's largest and most utilized consumer-facing nonprofit website and our primary point of contact with millions of donors and charities.
• Provide strategic direction and leadership for the engineering teams and the technology roadmap of the organization.
• Partner with the Chief Relationship Officer on improving user journeys and donor conversions to increase user engagement and donor acquisition and retention.
• Ensure technical and architectural leadership in the creation and maintenance of a secure, scalable, and robust consumer web environment.
• Partner with the Chief Program Officer on charity rating evolution, with a key focus on necessary data acquisition required for ratings completeness and tools evolution for ratings calculations.
• Assess current technology stack and lead any changes to frameworks, technical specifications, infrastructure, required so as to develop and maintain a technical roadmap that ensures systems and infrastructure are well-positioned for the next decade of growth including web and mobile applications, as well as fully integrated internal tools such as an analyst facing portal, nonprofit portal for rated charities, API evolution and consuming external data feeds from other infrastructure partners in the sector.
• Establish software development standards, quality assessment, and best practices while leading a team of remote technical leads through all phases of the software development life cycle.
• Must be able to balance providing strategic direction with direct hands-on management and troubleshooting of various code-bases during critical load periods throughout the year.
• Oversee the development, review, and certification of all back-up, cyber-security, data-security, and disaster recovery procedures and plans.
• Manage overall tech team budget, including headcount, consulting spend, software subscriptions, equipment costs, and professional development.
• Communicate with the Board and other key stakeholders on the technology team's state and use metrics to identify areas that need support.
• Architect and oversee the implementation and maintenance of complex data pipeline processes incorporating internal and external data sources.
• Establish best practices for company wide analytics, including machine learning where appropriate, access and insights to empower a deeper understanding of both nonprofits and users.
• Experience with alternative cloud environments to support continued cost and performance improvement.

Requirements

• Systems thinker passionate about Charity Navigator’s mission and vision.
• 15+ years of software engineering experience including strong architecture knowledge and robust engineering standards.
• Functional product experience, in senior strategic leadership positions, with demonstrated success leading products that have achieved significant scale.
• Innovative thinker, sharp and adept at understanding, integrating and applying key ecosystem insights and considerations into robust strategic planning processes.
• Previous C-level experience as a CTO, VP of Engineering, Chief Architect, or similar executive/senior technical leader role in driving technical strategic initiatives within consumer web environments.
• Functional knowledge in leveraging Agile software development across multiple teams and competing product portfolios with a track record of performance impact, results and outcomes.
• Ability to mentor engineers, review code and troubleshoot issues in all aspects of the stack with the team. Prior experience as a software engineer is a must with the ideal candidate being willing to be "hands-on" when and where appropriate.
• Depth of professional expertise needed for the skills, scale and complexity of the role.
• Ability to explain complex issues to nontechnical audiences
• Ability to balance the delivery of long-term goals and short-term objectives and thrive in a demanding, fast-paced environment requiring a high degree of productivity, adaptability, innovation, and follow-through.
• Experience hiring, managing, and mentoring technical leaders.
• Broad customer and industry acumen including demonstrating market-level influence through appearances at conferences, industry/standards and academic forums.
• Influential collaborator and communicator, diligent advocate, credible with c-level executives and technologists.
• Strong organizational and communication skills with experience developing a culture of ownership and accountability.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Salary Range: $190,000 - $215,000
