We are seeking an experienced Features Reporter to join our growing newsroom. The Features Reporter will provide breaking and trending news and feature coverage about the Chicago area cultural scene, including music, theater, TV, music, family fun, and art. The ideal candidate will be someone who can quickly gather facts about new developments, find and profile innovative, creative people, and write about artistic works with a sense of their big-picture context. You may also be asked to provide multimedia elements for the stories you report.

Key Responsibilities

• Producing factually accurate and original stories

• Provide breaking and trending news and feature coverage, as well as in-depth pieces on a variety of topics, including culture and lifestyle trends

• Report accurately and fairly to deliver fully sourced news stories on tight deadlines

• Observe Chicago culture for interesting people, creations, and trends

• Work collaboratively with editors and other reporters

Requirements

• A minimum of three years of professional reporting experience with published works in a daily newspaper, a magazine, or a news website. Previous cultural and/or entertainment coverage is a plus.

• bachelor’s degree – or equivalent professional experience – in journalism, communications, entertainment, or a related field.

• Track record of producing factually accurate and original stories. Please submit clips via links in your resume or cover letter.

• Ability to juggle multiple stories, delivering quick-turnaround dailies while working on longer-term pieces.

• Some scheduling flexibility is required, including the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

We are looking for an event manager to join our marketing team. The event manager develops, plans, and executes multiple events each year to engage new audiences and grow the community of members and readers for The Chicago Sun-Times.

Requirements
• Manage multiple events per year from the event concept phase through lead generation, expense management, promotional efforts, and event execution.
• Manage overall operations with event vendors and partners, including effective and successful labor management, productivity, cost efficiency, and quality control for each event.
• Oversee on-site logistics, including setup/teardown, volunteer management, and vendor coordination.
• Meet targeted objectives for lead generation.

The Sun-Times is looking for an innovative leader ready to help guide daily – and hourly – news coverage in one of America's most exciting and diverse metropolitan areas. We're seeking a Deputy Managing Editor, News, to help guide an ambitious and talented news team of general assignment reporters and assistant editors to produce important, interesting and useful stories that help Chicago area residents participate in, and make the most of, our community. The successful candidate will be energized by a broad mix of breaking and trending news coverage; able to inspire a team to create daily stories that serve, grow and engage our audiences digitally, in print, on social media and beyond; a creative storyteller comfortable working in multiple formats; a superlative and intentional communicator; and an enthusiastic collaborator who is adept at working closely with enterprise/topic desks, audience, visuals and print production teams. Working closely with the Managing Editor, News, you will direct and help shape impactful coverage on an hour-by-hour basis across digital, print and wire editions that will keep our audiences coming back again and again.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related major – or equivalent training
• Minimum ten years of experience in journalism with at least five years of experience managing reporters or editors
• Excellent news judgment – and a track record of audience awareness – to identify the most important, impactful and interesting stories in the Chicago area – and what to skip
• Stellar breaking news and deadline writing skills
• Strong line-editing and top-editing skills with the ability to turn stories into gold
• Excellent headline writing and packaging skills

Primary Duties

• Manage the day-to-day, hour-by-hour operations of the daily news desk

• Coordinate with daily news editors to ensure copy is edited in a timely fashion with strong attention to accuracy, tight writing, breaking news deadlines and best practices for internet and print

• Collaborate with enterprise desk editors to add deeper reporting or background on the day’s news and to coordinate and prioritize daily coverage from beat reporters

• Oversee the daily story budget and identify top story lines for emphasis on the website and the newspaper’s front page. Make sure appropriate resources – including reporters, photographers, videographers and graphics – are assigned in a timely fashion to the biggest stories of the day, prioritizing based on our goals and staffing

• Work closely with our audience and visual teams to make sure news stories are conceived of and presented in ways that ensure our stories reach, engage and serve as many readers as possible

• Create stories and other assets that serve Sun-Times wire clients, ensuring their needs are met

• Participate in creating a supportive culture, mentoring and training the team of reporters – including interns – with assistance from other news editors editors

An opportunity to make a big impact

We're looking for a versatile, experienced leader to guide coverage of politics and government from Chicago City Hall to Springfield to Washington that breaks news, uncovers corruption and serves Chicago area residents who want to understand how our government works and participate in our democracy.You'll lead one of our biggest enterprise news coverage teams - including City Hall and Washington reporters, politics writers, a columnist and two investigative reporters - to plan and produce news stories, analyses and short- and long-term enterprise and investigations at the core of one of the key areas for which readers have come to know and trust the Sun-Times.

It's an important moment as we reorganize our staff to continue to break news while focusing even more on enterprising stories and investigations that drive conversation and make a difference. Also, Chicago will be hosting the Democratic National Convention next year.

This key role offers an opportunity to shape and help build an influential and growing local news outlet in a highly competitive market that also offers exciting opportunities for collaborations beyond our own newsroom.

Requirements
• Set the goals, strategy and plans to achieve the growing ambitions for our coverage of politics and government, working with the deputy managing editor for enterprise and investigations, the leaders of other enterprise teams and other stakeholders in the newsroom.
• Manage the politics and government team to produce compelling and impactful journalism.
• Create an effective workflow to ensure that we are breaking news on politics and government and producing impactful enterprise stories and investigations.
• Elevate storytelling on politics and government across platforms to produce compelling stories online, in print, on social media, in newsletters and anywhere else.
• Build collaboration and communication in the newsroom and with our Chicago Public Media partners and with other news organizations.
• Help your team members develop their talents, get appropriate training, set goals for growth and achieve their ambitions.
• Help improve the Sun-Times' editorial excellence, workplace culture and impact.
• Promote diversity, inclusion and equity.
Requirements
• At least 10 years of newsroom experience, including news reporting and management of news coverage and investigations.
• Demonstrated ability to help a team reach ambitious goals and maintain a standard of excellence.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, think strategically and lead ground-breaking short-, medium- and longer-term news and investigative reporting.
• Ability to react quickly in a deadline-filled environment while also driving longer-range coverage.
• Knowledge of Chicago or Illinois politics.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a union environment.
