Consultant – GLFx Coordinator

Overview

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) was first launched in 2013 by CIFOR with core partners including UNEP, the World Bank, and the Government of Germany. Meaningful engagement of youth and other typically marginalized stakeholders was a cornerstone of GLF’s operation from the beginning.

Today, the GLF is the world’s largest knowledge-led platform on sustainable land use, dedicated to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Climate Agreement.

Building on a decade of successful conferencing during which we achieved the mainstreaming of the landscape approach the GLF has evolved to five innovation areas each set up to contribute to strengthening and enabling decentralized local action towards ecosystem restoration. These include: 1) Creating a Digital Knowledge Commons (having reached a billion people in 185 countries); 2) Pioneering Youth Leadership (60,000, 160 countries); 3) GLF Learning Program (Landscape Academy (18,000 learners); 4) GLF Investment Case, sustainable finance, and value chains, and 5) GLFx and GLF Communities of Practice. GLFx, is our program to decentralize the Forum to create community led GLF chapters, and communities of practice, that are designed to carry out restoration and other activities (including advocacy) on the ground while creating a learning hub at the national and subnational level.

GLF is supported by its Charter Members, 33 leading sustainable development organisations who invest in and co-create activities on the GLF platform and offer opportunities for intergenerational learning and exchange.

GLF is a place where a farmer can inform action, pathways, and policies; where international organizations can learn from the private sector and vice versa; and where CEOs, community leaders, communicators and scientists can share, learn, connect, and act together.

From building the investment case for sustainable landscapes, to conserving and restoring peatlands, to supporting restoration in Africa, GLF has been at the cutting edge in hosting and facilitating all manner of discussions to accelerate positive action for people, for the environment, and for the achievement of global climate and SDGs.
Duties and responsibilities

GLFx is an inclusive grassroots movement that bridges
local voices to global agendas and brings the spirit of GLF to local
communities. The GLFx initiative will foster regular gatherings of
like-minded stakeholders towards the acceleration of restoration activities
within their degraded ecosystems. These multi-stakeholder dialogues will gather
key actors, including private sector, NGOs, and government, for
solution-oriented discussions to catalyze restoration action.
The GLFx mechanism will collect and share ideas and insights emerging
from local projects to regional and global levels while disseminating upcoming,
innovative restoration technology rapidly to a local level. GLFx will build on existing restoration initiatives,
unite youth, indigenous, rural, and women’s groups, and be underpinned by
technical support provided by CIFOR and ICRAF.

The GLFx Coordinator will serve as the
global focal point for the GLFx initiative with a special focus on the Africa
region, playing a key role in achieving GLF’s aspiration of building an active
and vibrant online and offline community of like-minded individuals. Through
working within the GLF Knowledge Team and in close collaboration with the GLF
Communications and Digital teams, the GLFx Coordinator – supported by other regional
officers - will be responsible for growing and managing the GLFx community,
comprising of community-led chapters and Communities of Practice.

The GLFx Coordinator will work closely
with the following team members:
• GLF Program Manager, Community & Action
• GLF Knowledge Coordinator
• GLFx team members
• GLF Youth Coordinator

Key responsibilities include the following:

Develop, update and implement strategies for
community mobilization in the GLF, including chapter and GLFx platform
• In close collaboration with the GLF
Program Manager, Community & Action, review, assess, and edit when needed,
the current processes for chapter applications, onboarding & journey.
• Under the guidance of the GLF Program
Manager, Community & Action, coordinate the GLFx team to design, implement
and successfully deliver activities and deliverables
• Ensure co-production of knowledge with the
GLFx network to feed into the broader Knowledge of Commons Strategy, and
support processes for knowledge sharing, ensuring GLFx activities are
demand-driven and informed by consultations
• Work closely with the learning and GLF
Youth teams on capacity development opportunities, ensuring GLF address the
needs of the GLFx network and supporting the growth of the same.
• Work in close collaboration with the
Knowledge Management and M&E Officer, to ensure monitoring of GLFx processes
and measuring of successes.
• Monthly reporting on community KPIs and taking action on
underperforming KPIs

Coordinate global GLFx chapters and Communities
of Practice (CoP), ensuring quantitative and qualitative growth
• Engage directly with selected communities, networks, chapters,
and stakeholders, with a strong focus on the Africa region; this can include,
but is not limited to, leading GLFx chapter meetings and engage with chapters
and CoPs in the platform.
• Regularly engage with GLFx Chapter coordinators,
providing support and guidance to chapter activities and projects when needed.
• With the support of the GLF Communications team,
execute innovative approaches and activities for growing an action-oriented
community (for example, webinars, competitions, quizzes, videos, etc.)
• Collaborate with the GLF Digital & Communication
team to ensure visibility of chapters throughout all the different GLF
communication elements (e.g. website, newsletter, Landscape News, etc.)
• Lead chapter recruitment, onboarding, and engagement
over time, ensuring the quality of the selected chapters and regular
needs-assessments
• Coordinate with the GLF Knowledge Team to ensure
quality and maintain standard of GLFx events and related knowledge products.
• Ensure the GLFx platform serves the need of the GLFx
community

Partnerships, Fundraising and Growth
• Develop, lead and maintain relationships with both new
and existing, strategic partners and donors to ensure the GLFx program is
recognized, amplified and supported by partners.
• Ensure the continued growth of the GLFx network
regionally, strengthening relationships with regional partners and members.
• Identify, connect andcoordinate with the CIFOR-ICRAF network and the GLF Charter Members, to
ensure chapter activities and projects receive technical support, are
underpinned by robust evidence and knowledge, and apply rights-based and
gender-sensitive approaches
• Work in close collaboration with the GLF Sustainable
Finance team to assist with chapter funding schemes and related donor’s
deliverables
• Explore partnership opportunities while maximizing
synergies across the GLFx mechanism and the broader GLF agenda.
• Secure resources (in-kind and financial) for
activities by mainstreaming youth in resource mobilization efforts, including
within funding proposals, budgets, and emerging partnerships.
• With the support of the GLF Program Manager, Community
& Action, prepare and manage an annual budget, ensuring expenses are
meaningful and objective-based.

Education, knowledge and experience
• University degree in disciplines that are relevant to one or more of the GLF themes and sustainable development goals;
• At least 2 years’ experience in international development, community engagement, partner relations or growing online or in-person communities of practice. Volunteer experience can be considered too;
• Ability to plan, implement and evaluate complex projects;
• Ability to produce high quality written content;
• Prior experience with community mobilization relating to sustainable landscapes;
• Previous experience in managing a team and a budget is an asset;

• Formulating and developing world leading research on biodiversity and tree genetic resources, that has policy and development impact, together with other themes and geographic units at CIFOR-ICRAF and external partners and obtaining resources for CIFOR-ICRAF and partners to implement it.
• Setting medium term and annual goals and targets for the theme that contribute to meeting CIFOR-ICRAF’s institutional goals and targets and monitoring their achievement with appropriate KPIs.
• Formulating, developing, and sustaining partnerships with key research, donors, policy development organizations and engagement with the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), as part of transformative partnership platforms where appropriate, to ensure delivery of the goals of the theme.

2. Organize effective management of the laboratory and gene bank facilities within the theme.
• Putting in place and monitoring effective management arrangements for CIFOR-ICRAF’s in situ and ex situ gene banks, and seed and genomic laboratory facilities.
• Ensuring sustainable financing of these facilities through charging projects for services rendered, obtaining programmatic funding and / or commercial use of the facilities.

3. Manage a project portfolio to ensure sustainable staffing and development of the research area and its development impact.
• Leading the development of project proposals with principal investigators (PIs) across the theme and other CIFOR-ICRAF units and partners as appropriate, that generates a project portfolio that provides sustainable funding for critical staff and facilities required for the theme to deliver its goals and targets.
• Managing, in liaison with PIs, the sequencing, content and implementation of projects within the portfolio, including participation in projects as appropriate, to ensure sustainable funding of staff, development of the research area and documentation of its contribution to development impact.
• Ensuring career development opportunities and the working arrangements for staff contributing to the theme, including mentoring of scientists and PhD students as appropriate.

4. Ensure organized data collection, storage, and high-quality scientific outputs commensurate with the size of the theme (number of staff and funding).
• Leading publication of high impact scientific articles in ISI journals, including participating in writing of articles and facilitating publication of high-quality articles byscientists within the theme.
• Supervising the probity and accessibility of data collection by scientists working on research areas covered by the theme at CIFOR-ICRAF and the scientific quality of outputs.
• Ensuring that the number and quality of scientific outputs produced by the theme is commensurate with the staffing and funding of the theme.
• Ensuring that scientific evidence is conveyed to next users, including policy-makers through appropriate engagement and products in appropriate formats (engagement in policy fora including the UNCBD), policy briefs, user manuals, leaflets, training courses).
• Ensuring, in liaison with CIFOR-ICRAF’s communication, outreach and engagement unit, that scientific advances in the research area of the theme are widely promoted through conferences and other events, popular articles, blogs and social media.

5. Other duties.
• Take reasonable care of your own occupational health and safety and that of others as obliged by CIFOR-ICRAF’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and cooperate with CIFOR-ICRAF in complying with requirements under any statutory health and safety provisions of relevant country laws.

II. Requirements
• PhD in a relevant field with 15 years research experience.
• Proven track record of high impact research both in terms of scientific articles and their development and/or policy impact.

III. Terms and conditions
• This is a Globally Recruited Staff (GRS) position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive
remuneration in international currency commensurate with skills and experience.
• The initial appointment will be for three (3) years, inclusive of a nine-month
probationary period.
• Contract extension is contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the positionand available resources.
• The duty station will be in Nairobi, Kenya CIFOR-ICRAF HQ Offices.
