Citizen.org, a website of Public Citizen, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan consumer advocacy organization in the United States. Its mission is to ensure that all citizens are represented in the halls of power, whether in Congress, the executive branch, or the courts. To achieve this goal, Citizen.org conducts research and advocacy on a wide range of issues that affect consumer welfare, including health care, consumer safety, corporate accountability, and government reform. The Democracy Advocate will support the broad democracy work of the organization while specifically driving the political spending and influence disclosure and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) campaigns that Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division undertakes in the good government space. This work will include project management and coordination of intra- and inter-divisional work... streams such as: oversight of federal regulatory campaigns focused on political spending and lobbying transparency; ESG, including both proactive work such as coordinating the organization’s input into specific disclosure rulemakings as well as state-based defensive work; helping lead Public Citizen’s advocacy around money in politics legislation and executive orders; as well as working with staff and allies to coordinate corporate campaigns aimed at increasing political spending and lobbying disclosure at individual companies. RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Research and draft reports, activist engagement documents, fact sheets, letters, testimony, and comments on proposed rules.
• Draft and place opinion editorials, editorial board memoranda, letters to the editor, and online pieces; draft press releases; maintain press lists on ESG and corporate disclosure; communicate with reporters and give interviews; coordinate with Public Citizen Communications department as necessary.
• Manage the Corporate Reform Coalition social media presence through regular posts, ad campaigns, account monitoring, and building followers; manage the CRC website by keeping content up- to- date and maximally functional; assist with drafting email actions as necessary.
• Build and manage relationships with coalition partners and larger money in politics community to maintain engagement with Public Citizen’s work.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: College degree required. At least five years of experience with legislative advocacy, or money in politics work preferred. Outstanding analytical thinking, political judgment, and oral and written communication skills. Collaborative spirit, high energy, and enthusiasm.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The communications team works aggressively to get our messages out in print, radio, television and online. As part of the senior management team, the deputy director of communications will help chart the course of, and manage the implementation of, the communications operations of this leading national public interest organization.

The deputy communications director will work with the communications director and other Public Citizen program leaders to establish long-term goals and strategies for elevating the organization’s profile and will engage in strategic communications planning for programs throughout the organization. The deputy director will help identify rapid response opportunities and assist in managing the daily press operations.

Public Citizen works to affect change in a wide array of areas, from money in politics to climate and energy, and from public interest law to prescription drug safety. The communications operation involves traditional and online media outreach, social media engagement, communications to members, organizational allies and engagement of activists.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work closely with the organization’s communications director and other leaders to develop a long-term organizational communications vision and strategy;
• Work with the organization’s program areas to develop and implement strategic communications plans for specific campaigns;
• Identify rapid response opportunities daily and work with staff to implement them;
• Help oversee the organization’s daily press outreach, ensuring content gets out in a timely fashion without error;
• Edit and/or draft press releases, statements and op-eds as needed;
• Help manage a communications staff of press officers, a digital strategist, an online advocacy/social media associate and an editor/production manager;

REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree is required. We seek someone with at least seven years in nonprofit advocacy communications and at least two years of management experience, preferably in a unionized environment. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of designing and implementing strategic communications plans for a sizable nonprofit. We also seek someone well-versed in pitching national reporters, bloggers and broadcast media; and in writing and editing press releases, statements and op-eds. A journalism background is a plus. Experience in a variety of policy areas is strongly desired.
