About the Role

Since 2015, CommonLit has offered a free online reading program to students and teachers. CommonLit’s reading program has become widely implemented in schools and districts across the United States. Since 2017, CommonLit’s Partnerships Team has also sold premium digital services to schools and districts who are looking to seamlessly and effectively roll out CommonLit’s reading program to their teachers. In this role, the District Success Account Manager will work closely with CommonLit’s partner schools and districts to ensure customer success and satisfaction.

More specifically, the District Success Account Manager will start off the year by leading onboarding and virtual professional development for administrators and teachers in partner districts. Throughout the school year, this person will monitor usage data and proactively support our partners in effectively implementing CommonLit’s instructional library, assessments, 360 curriculum, and digital tools. This person will also be responsible for working with administrators to extend and expand their contracts with CommonLit. Performance-based commission is awarded to District Success Account Managers based on their success renewing and expanding school district contracts with CommonLit. The average first year District Success Account Managers typically earn $5,000+ in performance-based commission.

The ideal candidate should have at least 3 years of demonstrated success teaching a literacy-based subject (ex: ELA, Social Studies, Reading Intervention) or working for other literacy-based organizations, companies, or instructional programs. The candidate may also have experience in account management, sales, customer service, and/or hospitality.

We are looking for a candidate with excellent writing and oral communication skills, attention to detail, a strong ability to identify and troubleshoot customer roadblocks, experience utilizing a data-driven approach to solve problems, and a hunger to learn quickly. This is a position in a fast-growing organization that offers many opportunities for professional and compensation growth. We expect this person to start on June 12th or June 26th. Interviews for this position will begin in early March.

Compensation

$70-75k (commensurate with experience) plus benefits (including health care, dental, vision, 401k, and paid time off) and performance-based commission

CommonLit invests heavily in research to investigate the effectiveness of our program’s vision to close the literacy opportunity gap. In order to do so, we continually monitor how utilization of our program contributes to students’ reading and writing gains. CommonLit engages in an ongoing program of research that includes evaluation research, as well as internal research to inform us whether we are meeting the needs of teachers. Current studies include A/B tests, quasi-experimental, correlational, qualitative and mixed-methods research studies.

Most recently, CommonLit has received an Education Innovation and Research grant from the Department of Education. Over the next five years, CommonLit will be collaborating with external evaluators from Columbia University in conducting randomized control trial research across 80 US schools. The grant will enable CommonLit to conduct ESSA Tier I level research.

The Senior Research Analyst will work closely with the Director of Evaluation Research to conduct research on the effectiveness of CommonLit in promoting students’ reading and writing growth. The role will involve working on large and small scale evaluations of CommonLit’s efficacy, collaborating across data science, UX research, engineering, school partnerships, and more. The ideal candidate will have several years of experience with research methods, data analysis and reporting and will enjoy communicating with others. Strong organizational skills are a must. Experience with managing grant-related research is a plus. We expect this person to start by April 2023.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in social or behavioral sciences, education, economics, or related fields
• Facility with both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and analyses; coursework in research design and statistics or statistical modeling, including multiple regression
• Strong analytical skills with ability to synthesize disparate sources of data; facility with R statistical software, data visualization software, and general office software
• Maintaining an equity-minded perspective toward research questions, data analysis, and presentation of findings
• Outstanding communication skills, including oral, written and presentation including the ability to synthesize complex questions and professionalism when representing CommonLit to external partners
• Desire to advocate for new ideas, receive feedback and be a thought partner with the Director of Research

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong project management skills, with ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment

• Experience with survey design and previous experience supporting a large-scale study

About the Role

As a Senior UX/UI Designer at CommonLit, you’ll design user interfaces and experiences for millions of students and their teachers as part of our digitally-delivered literacy curriculum. You’ll work closely with many teams at CommonLit (Product, Engineering, Curriculum, Data, and Partnerships) to understand user needs and customer priorities, develop and test prototypes, design wireframes and mockups, support engineers and product managers throughout development, and track and continually improve product usability.

CommonLit’s product roadmap is driven by user research, data, feedback from teachers through our User Support team, and partnerships with schools and districts across the country. We work in small iterations and deploy several times a day. We’re building an application that’s used by students and teachers across a broad range of technology and connectivity access, and we take accessibility seriously.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who is committed to our mission and excited to work for a fast-paced nonprofit startup.

Responsibilities:
• Serve as a leader across product and engineering teams, uniting product managers, user researchers, engineers, and other designers in understanding design processes and how design relates to broader company strategy and goals
• Work closely with user researcher to deeply understand users/customers and their needs and ensure that all designs solve for user/customer problems
• Articulate and advocate for key design needs to the design team and the Chief Product Officer
• Create UX/UI prototypes for new products to be used on both desktop and mobile devices
• Work with user researchers and product managers to test and iterate on prototypes
• Design wireframes and mockups for new and existing portions of the CommonLit user experience

Qualifications:
• 5+ years experience in UX/UI design working for SaaS products (edtech experience a big plus)
• Deep knowledge of information architecture, usability, and UX/UI best practices for both mobile and desktop applications
• Strong understanding of functions you’ll work closely with, e.g. frontend engineering, product management, user research, marketing
• Ability to communicate design needs clearly and confidently to leadership and other stakeholders, and unite a team around design strategy and processes
• Expert in accessible design practices and ADA requirements
• Experience implementing a component library and design systems
• Experience working with UX researchers/UX research methods to deeply understand, empathize with, and advocate for end-users
• Experience conducting prototype and usability testing

• A portfolio with 2-3 case studies that clearly demonstrate how you led a team to solve a problem for end-users and the design processes you used
