Common Threads Mission

Common Threads is a national nonprofit that provides children and families cooking and nutrition education to encourage healthy habits that contribute to wellness. We equip under-resourced communities with information to make affordable, nutritious and appealing food choices wherever they live, work, learn, and play. We know that food is rooted in culture and tradition, so we promote diversity in our lessons and recipes, encouraging our participants to celebrate the world around them.

Common Threads’ Chicago Board

We are seeking passionate, enthusiastic applicants to our Chicago Board to support Common Threads via event-based fundraising and the creation of awareness to support the organization’s mission of providing cooking and nutrition education in under-resourced communities.

Board members’ responsibilities include quarterly participation in Chicago Board and committee meetings, fundraising, community support, promoting the mission of Common Threads and recruiting future Chicago Board members, donors and champions.

Qualifications
• Demonstrated commitment to philanthropy through volunteering and/or fundraising.
• Preferred: Three to five years or more of business experience (or relevant professional/postgraduate experience).

Membership Expectations
• Prepare for and regularly attend mandatory quarterly board meetings, special event planning meetings and events. If two or more board meetings are missed, your membership will be under review.
• Achieve a combined personal financial contribution and personal fundraising goal of $1,500, which can come from personal contributions, recruiting another board member, securing a sponsorship for a fundraising event, or securing cash donations from other individuals.
• Assist in promoting key Common Threads news and announcements to your network, including fundraising campaigns and organizational achievements.
• Suggest possible nominees to the Chicago Board who are women and men of rising achievement and distinction who can make significant contributions to the work of the Chicago Board, as well as Common Threads’ overall mission and progress

Participation Expectations
• Actively plan and participate in board events by serving on event committees.
• Serve in leadership positions by chairing/joining a committee, joining the Executive Committee and/or leading a special task committee.

Fundraising Expectations
• Willingness to utilize personal and professional networks in support of board fundraising goals.
• Attend and participate in planning/hosting fundraising events throughout the year.
• Actively work toward securing event sponsorships, cash donations, in-kind donations of goods or services, donation of professional services or airline miles, ticket sales for events and raffles, etc. Specific goals per board member will be agreed upon by the board per year.

General Governance Expectations
• To know the mission, vision, strategic plan and goals of Common Threads and the regional board
• To understand the strengths and needs of Common Threads.
• To actively engage in the mission by volunteering on an annual basis.
• The Chicago Board is considered an associate board. Unlike our national Board of Directors, Chicago Board members bare no fiduciary responsibility for the organization.

Common Threads provides supervision, mentorship, professional development opportunities, and in-house administrative, scheduling, and billing support. Full-time employees are eligible for health, dental, and vision insurance, a professional development stipend, 5 weeks of PTO per calendar year, and a retirement account (switching to matched 401k in January, 2023). Common Threads is a public student loan forgiveness program qualifying employer.

Salary: starting at $60,000; increasing based on experience.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program
• Valid WI license as an Occupational Therapist (or ability to apply for temporary license)
• Commitment to evidence-based practices and ethical standards
• Strong organizational and administrative skills
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• Have reliable transportation and auto insurance that meets our agency’s requirements (if applicable)

Qualifications:
• Master's Degree or above in Communicative Disorders
• Wisconsin PSPS or DPI license in Speech Pathology

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Create the optimal learning environment by implementing the traits of the ALCOT: Autism and Low Incidence Classroom Observation Tool
• Create learning experiences that make the content accessible and meaningful to students
• Utilize instructional adaptations including alternative assignments, supplemental instruction, and decreasing task demand
• Monitor and review data to make instructional decisions and plans
• Write progress reports with accurate data in a manner that is understood by families with correct grammar and punctuation
• Proactively implement intervention strategies as determined by the team and/or management.
• Participate in team meetings to address student success, needs, and concerns across the school day.
• Prompt individual students as necessary to facilitate independence in using routines, following directions, employing an individual schedule, and completing tasks.
• Monitor safety while promoting student independence at all times, including lunch, recess, and transition times such as arrival from and departure to transportation.
• Create visual supports and classroom materials as needed.
• Prepare the classroom for instruction prior to student arrival and following student departure daily.
• Embody professionalism and maintain student confidentiality at all times.
• Other duties as assigned.

Work and Environmental Conditions:
• Instructional, classroom, and school settings, including community-based instructional settings and outdoor environments.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to maintain stamina and adjust body positioning to support students in various settings and activities, including but not limited to standing, crouching, sitting for extended periods of time, supporting student safety, and use of various equipment, as directed by related service providers and supervisors.
• Ability to move quickly when necessary to ensure student, staff, and own safety.
• General computer use including typing and screen time.
