Overview:
AKIRA is looking for a transformative Controller, who will be a collaborator and a change driver in the Finance team and throughout the Company. The Controller is responsible for the direct supervision of all accounting functions. A successful Controller for AKIRA will be extremely hands-on in all of the Accounting-related processes within the team. As the Controller, you will oversee and evolve a small (8 - 10 person) Accounting/AP team into one that is best fit for this rapidly growing business. The Controller will also continually evolve policies and procedures to identify, resolve and document accounting issues in addition to creating procedures to make the close and reporting processes more efficient and accurate. The Controller will also direct the implementation of new technology, including a new ERP/Accounting system. This position reports to the Chief Administrative Officer/VP of Finance. This is an in-office position, with flexibility to occasionally work from home.
Essential Functions:
• Responsible for the month-end close process, from journal entries, accruals, reporting, and analytical review of the monthly operating results to ensure accurate accounting records are maintained
• Ensure that cash is properly handled, balanced and reconciled
• Collaborate cross-functionally with all other departments, including Data, Distribution Center, Stores, e-Commerce, Construction and IT to ensure proper recordkeeping and reporting, and cost efficiency, including monthly reporting and cost review meetings
• Coordinate with outside CPA firms for preparation of annual audits and tax returns
• Manage any additional audit and diligence requests
• Record, and evolve existing systems of accounting for all financial accounts, including:
• 1. Accruals
• 2. Leases
• 3. Fixed Assets
• 4. Receivables
• 5. Inventory
• Manage a small Accounting + AP team, communicating clear and high expectations, setting standards to measure performance, and providing a strong level of support
• Work closely with intra-departmental groups such as Financial Analysis and Payroll to ensure that expectations are clear across the department
• Review expenses and manage proper recordkeeping of important account data
• Coordinate with Inventory team on store scans to ensure proper measurement of assets
• Act as a liaison with banks and creditors
• Implement, document and maintain adequate and effective internal controls
• Implement, document and maintain adequate and effective processes to improve the close and reporting cycles to ensure timely and accurate reporting
• Ensure compliance with GAAS, as well as all applicable laws, rules, and regulations – it will be the Controller’s responsibility to stay on top of new Federal, State and Local regulations with regard to accounting and payroll
• Direct the implementation of ERP/Accounting software, along with VP Finance
• Direct the collection and payment of Sales Tax and other taxes
• Any other responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting
• CPA is highly preferred - must be proficient in GAAP
• 5+ years in an Accounting role
• 2+ years of experience working as a Controller
• CPA firm audit experience is highly preferred

Job Summary

Qualifications

Job Summary
The Controller will be responsible for the accounting operations of the company. The ideal candidate will have experience as an industry accountant, preferably in a senior role. As a strong communicator and skilled accountant, this person will also assist in streamlining our budgeting, payroll, and financial reporting processes.
Reports to: VP, Finance
Responsibilities
• Oversees the operations of the Accounting Department, which include A/P, A/R (billing and collections), month end close, and payroll.
• Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
• Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with US GAAP.
• Recommends benchmarks that will be used to measure the company's performance.
• Assist VP of Finance with the annual budget and maintaining forecasts; reports significant budget differences to management.
• Works with external auditors and provides needed information for the annual audit.
• Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
• Manage one direct report; oversee training programs and identify training needs.
• Partner with the HR Team on benefits and payroll related projects.
• Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business required, masters degree or MBA a plus.
• 5 years or more of related experience required, ideally in a startup or fast-paced environment.
• Prior management or supervisory experience is also a plus.
• Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred.
• Experience with Quickbooks Online, Bill.com, Rippling HRIS, Google Suite, MS Office.
• The ability to multi-task in a complex working environment with accuracy and proficiency.
• High degree of autonomy, attention to detail, and able to manage projects and work under tight deadlines.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.

• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, including a high degree of proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, lookups)
• High degree of proficiency working with Deltek Costpoint in a professional services firm
• Prior Joint-Venture (JV) experience preferred

Job Description:
General Accounting:
• Lead month-end and year-end closing activities, including journal entry posting, balance sheet reconciliations, and bank reconciliation; validate proper revenue and expenditure recognition at month-end.
• Apply principles of accounting to analyze financial information, record transactions, and prepare financial reports.
• Provide guidance on and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), and company practices and policies.
• Analyze financial statements and investigate and report on variances.
• Lead preparations for annual audits and other corporate reporting requirements.
• Take responsibility for the adherence to and communication of accounting and auditing policies and procedures.
• Maintain billing, collection, and reporting activities according to specific procedures and deadlines, including the generation of AR reports and allocation of payments.
• Perform reconciliation of Accounts Receivable (A/R) to the General Ledger (G/L) and reconciliation of customer account details for non-payments, delayed payments, and other irregularities.
• Lead the Accounts Payable (AP) function, including vendor setup, payment, etc.
• Financial Management (FP&A):
• Serve as a key advisor on the Deltek Costpoint ERP
• Lead development of indirect rate pools and the annual incurred cost submission, ensuring compliance with the FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulations) and CAS (Cost Accounting Standards), and act as the primary liaison for government audit support.
• Analyze financial information to determine present and future financial performance. Identify trends and recommend improvements accordingly.
