About the team...
The engineers at ConvertKit are smart, highly motivated and highly productive developers who care greatly about the craft of coding. We champion learning, bettering ourselves, and teaching to the rest of the team.
About ConvertKit
We are a fully remote company, scattered across 8 states and 4 countries.
Bootstrapped, profitable, and growing quickly. Reached #72 on the Inc 5000 fastest growing companies list.

Every team member is committed to our mission, vision and values. Our mission is not your standard mailed-in variety; We exist solely to help creators earn a living from their craft, and we take that very seriously.
About the role
You’ll be part of our awesome engineering team, helping to build our product. We primarily use Rails, Mysql, Redis and Sidekiq to get the job done. We’re facing real (fun) scaling challenges because of our incredible growth. Ideally, you’ve been there, done that before.

More importantly, there isn’t a team more committed to helping creators earn... a living doing work that matters.
We’re on a mission to help creators earn $1 billion using our email marketing platform. We have always been 100% independent and 100% remote. We are proud to have built a product that our customers love, and we look for people who have enthusiasm and belief in our mission, vision, and values to join our team.
The Role
ConvertKit is hiring a VP of Engineering who will be a strong leader for the company, a terrific collaborator for Product, and an excellent people manager who can guide the team to ship high-quality, reliable and scalable software quickly.
You’ll be leading a diverse team of 3 Engineering Managers, 22 backend, front-end, and infra engineers extending a complex software system that sends over 2 billion emails a month. Under the hood, ConvertKit is built on Ruby/Rails and React on top of MySQL, has significant components that make use of Elastic Search and Cassandra, and is deployed on AWS.
Some interesting problems the engineering management team faces in the next year include:
• Continuing to scale our software systems to meet increasing customer demand
• Working with Product Managers and Individual Contributors to optimize scoping conversations
• Enabling each squad and each engineer to work autonomously
• Working across teams to improve product analytics capabilities and enable squads to deeply understand our customers and act confidently to address their needs.
This position is perfect for someone who wants to contribute to and grow with our company's vision. Through our passion and commitment to the creative community, we strive to be a small yet efficient team that is self-funded and works remotely. If this sounds like something you'd like to do, then this may be the job for you!
• Lead the Engineering team, to build an effortless product used by millions of creators.
• Help ConvertKit grow while maintaining our strong internal culture; set strategy, plans, and measurement; and ensure communication flows through the org.
• Work with the Product team to improve our product development processes and bring the most value to our customers.
• Help the engineering function mature with initiatives like scoping, platform stability, tech lead roles, and engineering metrics.
• Collaborate with Operations on people processes like interviewing, hiring, and professional development.
• Increase - and retain - diversity across engineering by sponsoring underrepresented voices and actively recruiting from your diverse network.
• Facilitate individuals’ development through strengths-based coaching. Help your EMs understand the different stages of the employee lifecycle and how to proactively manage their team members through each of them.
• Deeply understand our customer base to build the best tool to serve creators. Stay up to date on market trends, creator needs and product opportunities.
Strong candidates will:
• Have extensive experience leading software teams to quickly ship well-tested features with a consistent cadence, on a stable, scalable and secure infrastructure.
• Be adept at using business and product metrics to make decisions and drive direction.
• Have the ability to foster both high performance and a high degree of psychological safety on the team.
• Guide and mentor your team with clarity and empathy. Be comfortable delivering constructive feedback to drive individual growth and foster productive conflict of ideas.
• Be autonomous and self-motivated to work effectively in a 100% remote company.
• Have a background in developing applications using Ruby on Rails, and experience with other tools in our technology stack: AWS, React, MySQL, Elasticsearch, Cassandra. This is not a hands-on coding role, and experience leading software development is more important than programming skill
• Have enthusiasm for and belief in our mission, vision, and values.
Success in this role will be measured by:
• Creating a world-class culture of inclusivity and belonging -- Qualitatively, we evaluate the happiness of engineers at ConvertKit, the commitment to diversity and inclusion, the psychological safety of the engineering environment, the contribution of engineers to the overall company culture, and our contribution to the wider engineering culture in the industry. Quantitatively, we measure team happiness through our regular engagement survey (leading indicator) and unwanted turnover (lagging indicator).
• Growth of our customer base -- The engineering team is responsible for scaling our infrastructure and building product to grow and retain free and paying customers on our platform. Experience at a product-driven SaaS B2C company ideal.
• Creating and driving our north star metrics -- We regularly evaluate our metrics to understand the value we provide to customers.
• Customer happiness -- The goal of everything we build is to make our customers happy. Engineers influence customer happiness (leading indicator) and churn (lagging indicator) by actively participating in establishing roadmaps and building high quality products that delight creators.
• Speed -- Our goal is to build the best creator marketing platform in the world. To do this, we need to constantly focus on increasing product development velocity without sacrificing quality.
• Keeping our promises -- We set SLAs that correspond to core app availability and functionality for our customers. We may not be an enterprise company with contracts dependent on SLAs, but we act like we are.
• Profit Sharing
• Four weeks paid vacation per year
• $1,000 yearly vacation bonus for taking five consecutive days of vacation, fully unplugged from work
• Equity in ConvertKit - when you join and when you help us hit company targets
• 401k with a 5% match
• 10 paid holidays a year
• Two weeks of paid sick + mental health and wellbeing time per year
• Up to six weeks of paid bereavement leave, medical leave, and disaster after six months of employment, two weeks of each paid leave in your first six months
• 12 weeks paid parental leave and flexible scheduling in your child’s first year
• $3,000 annual childcare benefit
• Monthly medical benefits up to $1,750 a month toward premiums. Dental and vision premiums covered 100%
• Gender-affirming benefits
• $4,000 equipment allowance for your first two years, $3,000 budget every following two years (US employees only)
• $3,500 annual learning & development budget
• Four-week, paid sabbatical after five years with the team
Compensation
ConvertKit has standardized salaries based on position, no matter where you live. For this role, we’re hiring for a VP (level 7 - $290,000) or Sr. VP (level 8 - $330,000). Level is determined based on your relevant experience and skills as evaluated through our interview process.
How to Apply
To get started, complete this application, including a cover letter and answers to the questions on the next page. For candidates we’re interested in, we’ll hold a series of conversations with people who would be your peers, reports, and coworkers; at a minimum, you can expect the following:
• A conversation with our CEO
• A conversation with the VP of Product
• A technical interview to discuss your technical and leadership skills with a board member and former VPE
• Working session with your direct reports
• A culture contribution interview with VP of Ops & CRO
We’ll keep you informed through every step of the process.

How to Apply
We know that most people hate interviewing (we relate!). We aim to make it as good an experience as we can, and part of that includes keeping you informed during the process.
Here’s what the full set of hiring steps looks like:
• Complete your application, which includes two, short-answer questions that help contextualize your experience
• Phone screen with the hiring manager
• Complete a short, 2-hour coding and writing assignment
• Technical interview to discuss the homework assignment and your technical knowledge with two engineers on the team
• Culture contribution interview with a product team member and another person from the team
To get started, complete this application, including answers to the questions on the next page. We read every single application, and your responses to our application questions help put your experience into context.
ConvertKit is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity in all of its forms, and we hire the best person we can for each role, no matter your personal background. Research tells us that applicants who are female or non-binary, as well as applicants who are people of color, are less likely to apply for roles they do not feel 100% qualified for. If you think you meet more than 50% of our requirements but fewer than 100% of them, please apply. We’re imperfect communicators, so think of our job postings as the starting point for discussion rather than proof that you shouldn’t apply Show more details...
