In recognition that health and academic performance of students are intimately linked, the Cornell University Graduate School supports the Big Red Barn Graduate and Professional Center (the Barn). The Barn is a dedicated space for over 9,000 graduate and professional students to experience a sense of belonging, community, and connection. The Opportunity

The Big Barn is seeking a Graduate Student Life Coordinator who will assist with programming efforts along with facility management and business operations of the Barn (including social media and marketing). Additionally, this position will:
• Provide limited oversight to develop programming strategies and event planning, often in concert with our graduate student workers.
• Collaborate successfully with graduate student workers and use student development theories and best practices to develop effective programming strategies.
• Support the relationship with the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA).
• Serve as a liaison between Director and student staff and supervise when Director is not present.
• Problem-solve issues during hours of operations.
• Prepare accounting reports, prepare income for sales tax reports, and assist with internal billing.
• Coordinate financial training for student staff.
• Manage the Barn email account.
• Work with the Director to ensure coverage of daily tasks during scheduled leave.
• Participate in Graduate School committees/projects.

This is a full-time (39 hours/week, 9 month, 2-year fixed term) benefits-eligible position that is based in Ithaca, NY and completely on-site. Typical work hours are 2pm-10pm Monday through Thursday and 2pm-7pm on Fridays. Flexibility to work 3-4 hours on weekends is expected.

What We Need

We are looking for a team member who is customer-service oriented, collaborative, flexible and interested in working with a diverse student body. Additionally, you will:
• Hold an Associates degree and 2-4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination.
• Demonstrate strong customer service orientation.
• Have experience planning and supporting programs, events, and team members.
• Display excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Have experience with marketing/social media using Facebook and Instagram.
• Be experienced with financial management.

If you possess these experiences and skills this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, to include:
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Experience working closely with people from diverse and/or historically underrepresented backgrounds.
• Experience planning, assessing, and managing programs and workshops for students and outside groups.
• Experience working with graduate or professional student communities.
• Experience and knowledge in higher education / academic culture.
• Knowledge of Cornell policies.

Craft Engaging Programs :
Develop exciting and meaningful programs that cater to the diverse interests and needs of our graduate students.

Supervise and Mentor:
Provide guidance to a team of graduate student staff, empowering them to execute signature events like T.F. and Trivia Night, as well as oversee the snack service.

Collaboration and Outreach:
Partner with campus-wide organizations and departments to facilitate successful event planning, implementation, and evaluation at the Barn.
Build strong relationships within the graduate and professional student community, offering advice and support when needed.

Facility Management:
Oversee the physical facility, manage business operations, and handle financial matters.
Ensure that the Barn remains a space committed to social justice and sustainability, promoting an inclusive environment.
