Summer 2024 Cruise Ship and Tour Vessel Position Alaska Native Voices (ANV) is currently seeking enthusiastic applicants who are excited about sharing the rich history and heritage of Southeast Alaska. Positions are available for Alaska Cultural Heritage Guides for the summer of 2024 season. ANV has been providing visitors with Alaska Native perspectives for more than 20 years. Our guides teach... visitors about Southeast Alaska’s diverse Native history. Each guide attends a preseason training which prepares them with the skills needed to effectively provide formal and informal programming on cruise ships and tour vessels.
Every guide brings with them their own personal history, narrative and experiences as they interact and engage with visitors from all over the world which enhances the cultural experience. Our mission is to provide the best cultural experience available and share Alaska’s rich culture with visitors. A successful applicant should either come with, or be energetic about learning essential knowledge of Southeast Alaska’s indigenous tribe's history, traditions and traditional methods, geographic areas of significance in and around various locations throughout Southeast Alaska (past and present), and be able to relate native stories. Abilities to perform, discuss or present native song, dance, language, displays and examples of art or tradition is desirable. In addition, successful applicants must:
• Be willing and available to be based in Gustavus, AK for two weeks at a time.
• Have a friendly, approachable demeanor and possess good customer service skills.
• Be comfortable with public speaking in front of large groups.
• Be comfortable with guiding small groups of people on land and providing a safe and educational experience.
• Be willing to learn more about Southeast Alaska’s native cultures and be willing to share this with visitors from all over the world (supplemental information on Native history is provided to all guides).
• Knowledge of the Southeast Alaska’s Native language(s) is a plus, but is not required for this position.
• Be punctual and able to follow a set schedule – many workdays begin in the early morning with pre-scheduled presentation times throughout the day.
• Have the physical ability to transfer luggage and interpretive materials aboard cruise ships and tour vessels.
• Possess the stamina to be able to work long hours when necessary.
• Must be a team player – work closely with fellow Cultural Heritage Guides, Crewmates, Alaska Native Voices office staff, service staff, and ship crew members.
• Understand technologies used for presentations and communication with support staff including email, web and word processing (some additional training provided).
• Must be able to climb a ten-foot rope ladder in order to board a cruise ship.
• Pass a random drug test. Note: ANV Conforms to federal drug restrictions which includes Marijuana.
Other information:
• Position: Full time and part-time, seasonal role from May through September (Training begins April 2024).
• Compensation is dependent upon experience and number of presentations performed.
• Benefits: No Medical/dental benefits are offered for this seasonal position
• Schedule: Varied and potentially flexible. Based on ship schedules and can vary from week to week.

Duties & Responsibilities
• The
faculty member will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and
contribute to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented
backgrounds. The faculty member will also participate in outreach and
contribute to departmental, college, and university service. In these and other
ways, the faculty member will help to develop innovative approaches to
enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding
collaborations with community and business partners.
• The iSchool is a place for the interdisciplinary study of information, and is focused on preparing students for living, thinking, and working in the digital age. Students are trained to become specialists in information management, data analysis, artificial intelligence, librarianship, social media marketing, and much more. The iSchool has highly ranked on-campus and online degree programs, with a normal teaching load of two graduate courses per semester for tenure track/tenured faculty.
Minimum Qualifications
• Earned PhD or commensurate degree in Information Science, Library Science, Computer Science, or relevant field (must be completed before start date).
• Demonstrated research and publication record.
• Documented evidence of teaching ability.
• A record of working with faculty, students, and

Ensures compliance with the Gaming Commission’s Tribal Gaming Minimum Internal Controls (TICS) and the Gaming Commission Regulations (GCR), by studying the standards, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Oversee and engage in all SMBMI’s cultural resources- and social/environmental justice- based government-to-government consultation with federal, tribal, state, and local governments. Evaluates requests for information about the cultural sensitivity of various landscapes, develops responses that highlight cultural resource awareness and protection, and reviews/negotiates various agreement documents and legal mandates. Maintains active governmental ties and collaborative partnerships with other tribes and local, state, national and international agencies on matters of cultural resources-based policies and practices.
2. Establish and recommend strategic and programmatic policies and actions to protect, maintain, and promote the cultural resources of the Tribe that honor and implement SMBMI’s traditional and contemporary principles and practices pertaining to heritage stewardship.
3. Oversees the CRM GIS program, including agreements with and access to CA CHRIS centers to gather data for the GIS program. Oversees the Tribal archive program, including providing guidance on acquisition goals, processing priorities and techniques, improving community access and services, as well as the design, construction, operation and staffing of a future curation facility and/or museum complex.
4. Develop, oversee, conduct, and engage in cultural literacy training and educational efforts regarding the Tribe’s culture, history, and heritage stewardship, both on and off the Reservation, while encouraging Tribal community engagement and capacity-building, as well as inter-departmental coordination and cross-functional training within the Tribal employee base.
5. Advise and provide subject matter expertise and technical analysis to Tribal leaders, CEO, and other tribal departments about opportunities and strategies to optimize existing or effectively respond to proposed—internal projects or processes, as well as external legislative, regulatory, and political actions, affecting the proper management of tribal cultural resources across Serrano ancestral territory.
6. Assists in the identification, acquisition, and management of Serrano cultural landscapes and historic sites. Facilitates the repatriation of ancestors, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony, as well as traditional cultural places (TCPs) and sacred landscapes to the Tribe.
7. Foster and maintain active governmental ties and collaborative partnerships with other tribes and local, state, national and international agencies on matters of cultural resources-based policies and practices as appropriate, positioning SMBMI as a thoughtful and responsive regional and national leader in conversations about Indigenous heritage stewardship.
8. Facilitate the repatriation of ancestors, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony, as well as traditional cultural places (TCPs) and sacred landscapes to SMBMI, via the implementation of various federal and state laws and the development of cooperative agreements and partnerships.
9. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department and assumes other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to any public health emergency.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field is required.
• Minimum eight (8) years’ experience conducting CRM work in private sector as a Principal Investigator eight (8) years’ experience as GS-9/11 or higher (or equivalent) working for Higher Education (college level or higher), federal, state, tribal government as an anthropologist, archaeologist, historic preservationist, or heritage steward is required.
• Minimum Five (5) years of direct supervisory experience is required.
• An equivalent combination of education and progressive, relevant, and direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational/experience requirements indicated above.
• Expert knowledge of and experience in the interpretation and application of Federal Indian Law, and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, executive orders, codes, policies, and procedures, as well as the concepts of agency, decolonization, and socio-economic-, environmental- and restorative justice, that govern and inform the management of cultural resources is required.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct government-to-government tribal consultation and establish effective collaborative, mutually respectful, and mutually beneficial relationships with various governmental, academic, and private agencies and entities is required.
• Advanced technical skill in accurately and effectively communicating, both orally and in writing, with the tribal community, government agencies, corporations, non-profits, universities and museums, including the ability to review, negotiate and write agreement documents (MOUs, MOAs, PAs, etc.); produce reports, business correspondence, policy, and procedural documents and conduct training, is required.
• Ability to research, read, coalesce, analyze, and interpret highly complex legal, policy, regulatory, and legislative documents, as well as general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures, and provide high-level, lay-accessible presentations, white papers, and memos about such information is required.
• Demonstrated skill in conducting oral history-, ethnographic, and primary-resource based research within, for and by tribal communities and establishing and facilitating community-based participatory research and tribal cultural committees and advisory boards is preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to create engagement opportunities around, educational programming about, and community capacity building regarding heritage stewardship for a highly varied tribal demographic is preferred.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to ancestral human remains, cultural objects, and sacred sites is required. Demonstrated experience handling ancestors and/or cultural objects pursuant to NAGPRA and California Health and Safety Code and Public Resources Code is preferred.
• In-depth knowledge of Serrano history and culture, as well as the archaeology of Serrano ancestral territory is preferred.
• Experience in leadership, governance processes, and program management, including visioning, scoping, structural and data organization and analysis, institutional assessments, policy creation and improvement, and cross-functional team building is preferred.
• Experience in contract negotiation, administration, and implementation is required.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully apply to, implement, and manage grants is preferred.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and Internet for research, is required. Working knowledge of SharePoint, Fusion, Workday, and PastPerfect is preferred.
