Crooked Media is looking for a dynamic, endlessly curious, and innovative producer for our daily news podcast, What A Day. Our close-knit team works hard to keep our news-hungry listeners from falling into the doom-scrolling abyss by giving them everything they need to know to start their day.
So if you can break down the latest catfight in Congress without breaking a sweat, or even find the humor in the fight over the debt ceiling – we want to hear from you!
Successful candidates must be able to work Sundays through Thursdays from 1 PM to approximately 10 PM Pacific time, and willing to adjust working hours in the event of breaking news or as other circumstances dictate.
Crooked has adopted a hybrid work model for our entire staff. We believe that the best work is done in a hybrid capacity as it combines the flexibility of working from home with in person collaboration. We are ideally looking for Los Angeles based candidates, or candidates willing to relocate within the first 3 months of accepting an offer. In addition, Crooked requires all employees to provide proof of full vaccination and booster to combat the spread of Covid-19.
How You'll Spend Your Time:
• Participating in editorial planning, research, interview booking, and prep
• Monitoring the news while maintaining a broad range of contextual knowledge and interest in what's happening in the new cycle
• Producing interviews or other show segments
• Editing audio and finding creative ways to use sound to enhance the show
• Writing clear, witty, and informative copy (with minimal supervision)
• Serving as primary backstop in quality check listens before episodes publish
• Filling in for senior producer as needed
What You'll Bring To The Table:
• 3-4+ years of news, editorial, radio, or podcast production
• Demonstrated experience working in daily or political news under tight deadline pressure
• Exceptional writing, editing and research skills & strong editorial judgment
• Understanding of journalism and journalistic ethics
• An ability to develop and handle multiple long & short-term projects of varying complexity
• Proficiency with ProTools, Adobe Audition, or other audio editing software
• A self-motivated, proactive, creative, accountable, and collaborative attitude
• A proven track record of covering historically marginalized communities and subject matters with respect
• Ideal candidate also has experience in delivering news and information with a humorous or more entertaining tone

The ideal candidate prioritizes our audience's information needs, is highly organized and communicative, and can produce high-quality coverage across a range of issues. This managing editor works closely with other top editors to coordinate our daily needs with longer-term enterprise, features, on-demand products and investigations to make sure it all shines across platforms. The managing editor, daily news plays a critical role in ensuring our content is inclusive and adheres to internal style guides. The candidate is also responsible for meeting source diversity goals.
You'll supervise a team of managers who oversee our daily news team, which serves both audio and digital platforms.
The ideal candidate will have experience leading an editorial team in a daily deadline environment, strong digital publishing experience, a willingness and track record of creating space for creativity as well as delivering consistent, meaningful feedback to everyone on their team. Experience with the practice of engaged and solutions-oriented journalism, or the enthusiasm to embrace it, is also a key requirement.
Compensation:
