The Digital Archivist (DA) will develop a robust digital archive and interactive website that will preserve, interpret, and share materials related to African American history and culture in Greater Detroit and in the Midwest region. This innovative project seeks to delineate the largest urban population of African Americans as a national heartland of African American history and culture spanning four centuries. The project will emphasize the role and national impact of the Charles H. Wright Museum in teaching the nation of the powerful contributions of “community curation,” in which members of the public collect, share, and interpret the histories of their own families and communities. In its next phase, we aim to incorporate institutional archival collections into the digital archive, as well as to create an interpretive framework that will contextualize digitized materials within four centuries of the African American experience.

Essential Functions:

The Digital Archivist-Historian will serve as a key digital strategist and architect for the project, helping to maintain, populate, design, and implement digital tools with which members of the public – including digital novices – can curate, interpret, and share their history. The Digital Archivist-Historian will focus on the following specific functions:
• Manage digitization, processing, and cataloguing efforts for the project;
• Oversee the project website and help lead interpretive planning around its future development;
• Serve as the Museum’s Collection Department’s primary liaison with specialized contractors in website and digital repository design;
• Act as a supervisor and mentor for college undergraduates and grad students, developing and implementing opportunities for students to participate in the project;
• In collaboration with other Museum collaborators and stakeholders, develop online exhibitions and interactive features that engage broad and diverse audiences;
• Work closely with Collections and Curatorial staff, consult and assist with the Museum’s other digital humanities projects, including the Detroit Neighborhood Oral Histories Project as well as the Wright Museum’s own internal, online institutional archives.
• Analyze and assess material condition and content. Arrange, preserve, describe, and provide access to bodies of historical archival papers and audiovisual collections according to best practices.
• Assist the Archivist in administering and implementing the Archives Program.
• Perform reference services on a regular schedule.? Answer email, telephone, written and in-person requests for information about the museum processed and unprocessed research collections and how patrons may access the collections.
• Study the origin, provenance, and content of the digital collections and conduct research both in the papers and secondary sources for collections without deeds/provenance to obtain information about the collections, records, and their creators.? Obtain releases and secure deeds of gift for access and fair use purposes.

Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree with a focus in, Art History, History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, or other related field required; Master’s degree preferred
• Professional experience in digital archiving is required.
• Strong knowledge of American and African American history is strongly preferred, as is teaching and mentoring experience.
• Professional background in website design, public history, oral history, media production, and/or digital humanities preferred
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
