Job Summary

The monitor tech observes and interprets patients' cardiac rhythm status and listens for alarms. Informs the RN of variances to initiate examination of the patient. Greets people at the nurses' station and answers their questions or refers them to appropriate staff members. Transcribes medical orders. Performs unit based non-clinical duties related to the admission, discharge and transfer of patients. Organizes activities at the nurses' station. Accepts patient medications from pharmacy or tube station and gives directly to the charge nurse or assigned nurse.

Job Requirements

a. Minimum Education Requirement :
High School Diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of medical terminology strongly preferred. Unit Secretarial course preferred. EKG interpretation class required.

b. Minimum Experience Requirement :
Prior unit secretary experience preferred. Excellent customer service skills required.

c. Minimum License Requirement :
BLS required. For Emergency Room, Assaultive Behavior Training Certification that meets AB508 and SB1299 required within 30 days of hire/transfer. New hires that have completed Assaultive Behavior training outside of Emanate Health will be required to complete Emanate Health Work Place Violence online awareness module within 30 days of hire/transfer.

Monitor Tech Position Summary:
• Demonstrates knowledge of dysrhythmias, patient diagnosis, history and specific cardiac medications.
• Notifies the Registered Nurse of patient rhythm verbally and documents the notification on the rhythm strip.
• Assures alarms are set on each patient.
• Demonstrates skills in handling cardiac monitors and related equipment. Monitors equipment and notifies Biomedical Technicians when appropriate.
• Recognizes emergency situations, proficiently uses code blue procedures, and traces rhythms during emergencies.
• Applies EKG electrodes and sets up initial telemetry when appropriate.
• Accurately charges patient for telemetry use.
• Restocks depleted supply and reorganize used equipment.
• Acts as a focus of communication in the Nursing Station regarding patient care activities and location. Provides information of same.
• Receives, greets and directs physicians, patients, visitors and hospital personnel arriving to or calling the Nursing Unit.
• Receives requests from physicians, patients and families and refers requests to appropriate Nursing staff.
• Observes Hospital and Unit policy in assisting and directing patients, staff and visitors.
• Answers telephone in a courteous and helpful manner.
• Calls physicians as directed.
• Calls ancillary departments as directed.
• Immediately answers call lights at the desk and communicates patient requests to appropriate Nursing staff.
• Maintains a clean, safe and functional working environment.
• Maintains adequate quantity of forms, materials, supplies and equipment inventory on assigned Unit.
• Maintains assignment and bulletin board and other communication media.
• Ensures confidentiality of patients' medical records.
• Initiates, assembles and maintains charts for all assigned patients.
• Transcribes physicians' orders; initiates all necessary forms, requisitions and communications necessary to implement orders.
• Enters data into computer.
• Graphs temperature, pulse, and respiration as directed. Records weights, blood pressure and intake and outputs as directed.
• Initiates and maintains patient Kardex and information contained in same.
• Files diagnostic and laboratory reports in appropriate patient chart.
• Maintains patient chart in appropriate, functional order as prescribed by hospital and Unit policy.
• Monitors location of charts at all times and prepares the transfer of medical records upon discharge or expiration of the patient.
• Assists with patient's transfer by assembling chart to accompany patient.
• Assists with preparation of chart for patients going to surgery by checking charts for completeness.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Monitor Tech candidate will possess the following education, licenses/certifications, and experience:

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Initial Dysrhythmia Recognition.

Minimum Experience: Recent acute care experience as a ward secretary / monitor tech preferred.

Preferred Skills and Abilities: Ability to perform clerical duties as assigned and medical terminology.

Pay range: $19.53 - $27.04

Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience
