For anything originally drafted by the legal assistant, the firm expects the legal assistant to proofread the work, including checks for proper spelling, grammar, and formatting.
· Maintain e-filing in proper order. While paper files are maintained by the administrative staff, digital client files are the responsibility of the responsible attorney’s team. Disorderly files can lead to lost documents and can cause the attorney to make an error in litigating or managing the claim. Legal assistants should know how to properly name a file, and how to properly categorize the documents in the file so they can be easily found. In addition, Legal assistants are charged with checking the supervising attorney’s “Scanned Mail” folder, which contains e-copies of all incoming mail and faxes, for placement in the appropriate client’s e-file.
· Request, understand, and summarize medical records. Legal assistants will spend a large amount of time requesting, reviewing, and organizing medical records. The procedure for requests and organizing bills related to requests is specific to Lawrence & Associates and must be adhered to. Reviewing and organizing medical records must be done to the satisfaction of the responsible attorney, although training will include the basic standards set forth by the firm.
