• Role model professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Participate in weekly interdisciplinary team meetings and case conferences, as necessary, to assure appropriate care and service are provided to the patient.
• Maintain up to date knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid/JCAHO standards thru inservices and workshop attendance.
• Assesse the severity of patient symptoms, communicate to the physician and record significant findings, intervenes as appropriate.
• Document care and services provided in accordance with DHCH Policy and Procedures and regulatory standards.
• Complete documentation accurately, timely, concisely.
• Medication reconciliation and education to prevent adverse events and readmission to hospital
• Observe patient’s reactions to medications and reports significant incidents to the physicians.
• Communicate regularly with team members, caregivers, and physicians.
• Follow infection control standard precautions and uses personal protective equipment as required.
• Delegate and supervise care given by NCA’s/LPN’s.
• Develop plan of care for aides, assign care to aides based on the skills of the aide, the availability of the aide for patient care continuity, patient preference (when possible), and other considerations as determined by the patient’s care needs.
• Identify personal learning needs and implements corrective action: assists in planning and conducting staff development programs to improve DHCC effectiveness.

What you will do:

Operational Summary
Serve as the Superintendent of the 77' oceanographic research vessel R/V Shearwater , operated by Duke University and based at the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina. The Duke University Marine Laboratory strives to be at the forefront of understanding marine environmental systems, their conservation, and their governance through leadership in research, training, communication, and application.
Reporting to DUML Associate Director and working closely with the Marine Operations Manager, the Superintendent is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the vessel, including administration, management, safe operation, and maintenance, in support of scientific research, education, and community outreach. This position serves in a supervisory role to the captain and crew members. Shoreside work will be the primary function; but the Superintendent serves as relief captain, including overnight cruises and work onweekends/ holidays. The position is three quarters time (or 30 hours per week), primary hours are 9am to 3pm daily, with flexibility and based on position need.
Scheduling, Administration and Operations (60%):
Oversee the management and operation of R/V Shearwater (72' aluminum hull vessel).
Coordinate scheduling, vessel contracting and billing for the R/V Shearwater.
Coordinate cruise planning efforts with R/V Shearwater users in coordination with vessel's Captain/Crew to include review and approval of cruise objectives, scientific equipment needs, documentation management, fuel, food, logistics, vessel maintenance/repair.
Ensure effienct utilization, operational readiness, and fulfillment of R/V Shearwater
mission to include research, education, and outreach.
Oversee R/V Shearwater budget and expenditures; participate in budget development in conjunction with DUML Associate Director
Serve as R/V Shearwater contracting and procurement lead ensuring compliance with Duke University policies and procedures.
Market R/V Shearwater availability and capabilities via existing website, email list servs, etc. Serve as first line of customer service for R/V Shearwater users
Supervise, train and schedule Captain/Crew for R/V Shearwater. This includes giving work assignments, completing performance evaluations, make personnel recommendations (promotion, hiring and disciplinary actions), as well as checking for completeness of work and accuracy.
Serve as relief Captain for R/V Shearwater, R/V Richard T. Barber and R/V Kirby-Smith as needed.
Support and/or serve as back-up for management, vessel operations and scheduling of other Marine Operations Department vessels and the Marine Operations Department facility.
Compliance (20%):
Maintain R/V Shearwater compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and Duke University regulations and policies. Operational Summary
Serve as the Superintendent of the 77' oceanographic research vessel R/V Shearwater , operated by Duke University and based at the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina. The Duke University Marine Laboratory strives to be at the forefront of understanding marine environmental systems, their conservation, and their governance through leadership in research, training, communication, and application.
Reporting to DUML Associate Director and working closely with the Marine Operations Manager, the Superintendent is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the vessel, including administration, management, safe operation, and maintenance, in support of scientific research, education, and community outreach. This position serves in a supervisory role to the captain and crew members. Shoreside work will be the primary function; but the Superintendent serves as relief captain, including overnight cruises and work onweekends/ holidays. The position is three quarters time (or 30 hours per week), primary hours are 9am to 3pm daily, with flexibility and based on position need.
Scheduling, Administration and Operations (60%):
Oversee the management and operation of R/V Shearwater (72' aluminum hull vessel).
Coordinate scheduling, vessel contracting and billing for the R/V Shearwater.
Coordinate cruise planning efforts with R/V Shearwater users in coordination with vessel's Captain/Crew to include review and approval of cruise objectives, scientific equipment needs, documentation management, fuel, food, logistics, vessel maintenance/repair.
Ensure effienct utilization, operational readiness, and fulfillment of R/V Shearwater
mission to include research, education, and outreach.
Oversee R/V Shearwater budget and expenditures; participate in budget development in conjunction with DUML Associate Director
Serve as R/V Shearwater contracting and procurement lead ensuring compliance with Duke University policies and procedures.
Market R/V Shearwater availability and capabilities via existing website, email list servs, etc. Serve as first line of customer service for R/V Shearwater users
Supervise, train and schedule Captain/Crew for R/V Shearwater. This includes giving work assignments, completing performance evaluations, make personnel recommendations (promotion, hiring and disciplinary actions), as well as checking for completeness of work and accuracy.
Serve as relief Captain for R/V Shearwater, R/V Richard T. Barber and R/V Kirby-Smith as needed.
