Reporting to the Director of the Press, and working in close conjunction with the other strategic managers and functional directors who each oversee large areas of the Press's operations, the Editorial Director establishes the editorial vision and sets the overall direction for the Books Editorial Group of Duke University Press. This position is responsible for directing the editorial agenda and for planning the book-publishing program to ensure the highest levels of quality and peer-review excellence across all subject areas. The Editorial Director leads and supervises editorial staff, setting short-and long-term goals for individual editors and reviewing performance. In conjunction with other Press managers, sets seasonal lists, reviews, and analyzes financial performance of Press lists. This position also performs all functions of an acquisitions editor; represents Press to other University... units; represents Press at scholarly conferences and at public events. Manages the title pipeline to ensure a predictable and timely flow of manuscripts into the publication process. Establishes the overall editorial vision for the Press Leads the Books Editorial Group in support of DUP's mission Furthers our brand reputation for publishing high-quality scholarship, from bold and progressive thinkers in emerging and vital fields of scholarship Establishes, implements, and monitors long- and short-range editorial goals, policies, and operating procedures Engages staff in long-term list planning and title acquisition across all disciplines Works with editors and the Press Director to determine the agenda for Editorial Advisory Board meetings and oversees the preparation of editorial packets for EAB members II. Develops lists in relevant subject areas and coordinates list management across the editorial group Solicits, acquires and reviews prospective manuscripts for publication by Duke University Press Performs all tasks of acquisitions editor to acquire approximately 15-25 titles per fiscal year Implements policies and procedures for the acquisition, handling, and transmittal of manuscripts Provides complete and accurate information about contracts and manuscripts to Duke University Press production, marketing, intellectual property, business, and other Press departments and administration Approves all contract requests, develops and monitors seasonal lists, and determines production priorities Represents the Press at professional meetings and conferences as appropriate Represents the Press to other University units as necessary Ensures a steady and predictable flow of manuscripts into the publication process III. The Digital Content Manager also provides analysis and project management for digital content and asset initiatives at DUP. This position works closely with DUP’s Editing, Design and Production group; as well as third-party vendors and partners to ensure the high-quality and effective publication of books and journals content online. This is a full-time position, reporting to the Information Systems Manager, and is a member of the Business Information and Technology Services (BITS) group.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
I. Analysis and Project Management
• Maintain XML and EPUB tagging specifications that accurately support Press content and business rules; provide subject matter expertise in how tagging specification supports or drives display and function of content in digital systems (online, e-readers, business systems)
• Ensure that content is optimized for discoverability, accessibility, and user experience in the digital environments
• Manage the digital content archive
• Manage the delivery of metadata and content to third parties, such as indexers, discovery services, and preservation services
• Manage large-scale conversions and transformation projects, establishing contracts, schedules, costs, and scope; conduct quality assurance on vendor content deliverables and practices
II. User Support
• Employ effective strategies for working with professionals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences; demonstrate sensitivity to language relating to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and ability/disability
• Maintain a support and enhancement request process
• Respond promptly and fully to requests for support, both internal and external
• Troubleshoot and remediate tagging errors
• Report regularly on status of support requests
• Liaise with internal stakeholders and external vendors to coordinate work
III. Operations Management and Support
• Participate in new product, systems, and platform planning
• Identify and incorporate new content standards and best practices
• Budget annually for digital content projects and maintenance; manage the budget and expenses throughout the year, including periodic reporting and timely and accurate payment of vendor invoices
• Establish and maintain digital content and asset vendor relationships
• Document content standards and practices
• Communicate standards and practices to staff and vendors
