Marine Science Discipline Coordinator

Position Summary
Assists in the education of students in Marine Science. Implements directives of faculty members and assists in instruction of multiple classes and lab sections in Marine Science. The position will work with all Marine Science faculty as needs arise and will compliment, not replace, undergraduate lab assistants.

This a part-time position (29 hours/week) at $15/hour from August 14, 2023 - May 17, 2024.

Essential Functions (other non-essential duties may be assigned)
• Work with faculty members and undergraduate lab assistants to answer questions during lab, grade assignments, and facilitate make-up labs and exams.
• Maintain and prepare materials for lab activities in the Galbraith Marine Science Laboratory, including preparation and safe disposal of chemicals.
• Assist faculty and students in the field, including on a boat, at the beach, and in the water.
• Drive campus vans for field trip excursions supervised by faculty.
• Deliver materials to the Center for Academic Excellence and other locations on campus.
• Assist in disaster preparations for hurricane readiness or other adverse events that could cause long-term damage or closure to the campus.

Required Qualifications
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and faculty to facilitate coursework.
• Ability to manage work schedules effectively.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment specific to assigned discipline.
• Knowledge of assigned discipline and ability to answer student questions related to the discipline.
• Knowledge of and skills in Microsoft Office and G-Suite software.
• Ability to work up to 29 hours per week in person on campus during normal working hours. (Hours are somewhat flexible, but depend on the needs of the discipline.)
• Valid driver's license and a safe driving record.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
• Occasionally required to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
• Frequent periods of standing and moving around the classroom.
• Frequent use of hands and arms to reach, grasp, and use laboratory equipment.
• Must pass the Eckerd College swim test.
• Occasionally required to collect specimens in shallow water or from a vessel.

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in appropriate academic discipline or closely-related discipline. Experience in operation of power boats is not required but would be beneficial.

Position Summary
Assist with managing the recreational watersports area of the Waterfront, including training and supervision of student employees and execution of recreation events.

Essential Functions (other non-essential duties may be assigned)
• Assist with developing recreation goals and objectives, focusing on adapting to changing needs of students, as well as facility and equipment needs.
• Ensure the safe, enjoyable, and efficient use of boats and equipment by members of the EC community.
• Manage safety, functionality and cleanliness of recreation area of Wallace Boathouse.
• Assist with managing safety, variety, functionality, replacement, and scheduling of recreation equipment and boats.
• Assist with planning and executing recreational activities for the College Community.
• Supervise activities, presentations, tours, training, and campus groups who use the Waterfront as a venue for their events.
• Participate in training programs of student employees in recreation to ensure proficiency in customer service, basic watersports skills, Waterfront procedures, outdoor recreation, and event planning.
• Participate in training of College boat drivers who function in various aspects of watersports including fishing, wakeboarding, class instruction, summer camp instruction, marine science activities and sailing team activities.
• Assist with supervision of watersports instructors and teach watersports classes when needed.
• Maintain proficiencies in power and sailboat operations to assist with program support, activities, and watersports classes.
• Work with ECOS clubs and representatives.

Required Qualifications
• Knowledge of watersports including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, wakeboarding and power boating.
• Knowledge of outdoor recreation activities including camping, fishing, etc.
• Skills in written and verbal communication.
• Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
• Frequently required to move and transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Frequently required to move, ascend, descend, and position self to prepare, transport, and repair equipment.
• Frequently required to operate equipment, tools, and watercraft.
• Frequently works outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
• Occasional after-hours work (weekends, holidays) required.

Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree or three years of relevant experience in recreational watersports; the equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• US Sailing or ASA Keelboat Instructor Certification or equivalent
• National Safe Boating Course Instructor Certification or equivalent
