Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is seeking a qualified and experienced individual to provide technical assistance with the establishment, management, budgetary oversight, and evaluation of Governor’s Schools and to provide technical assistance with the implementation of programs for gifted students.

Minimum Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of gifted education and Governor’s Schools programs and ability to communicate such knowledge to a variety of audiences for a variety of purposes;
• Budget management skills that incorporate working with school directors and fiscal agents to ensure fiscal responsibility;
• Program and project management skills for activities such as selection process for the Summer Residential Governor’s School programs; review of local plans for the education of the gifted; evaluation of the Governor’s School program and the functions of the Virginia Advisory Committee for the Education of the Gifted;
• Program and project management skills for activities to support Academic Year Governor’s School programs; review and evaluation of the Academic Governor’s School programs and the financial support for each program.
• Demonstrate the ability to define problems and apply problem-solving techniques to complex educational issues related to Governor’s School programs, gifted education and STEM education; to apply research methods;
• Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with support staff and teams of professionals; to manage the completion of multiple assignments and/or projects with critical deadlines; and to coordinate, critique, and edit work products of a diverse staff of technical and professional experts;
• Considerable skill in communicating both orally and in writing within a formal organization;
• Recognized ability as an educational leader in K-12 education;
• Classroom teaching experience in K-12 education, and considerable experience in working with students in various settings;
• Extensive experience in developing educational programs or services for local school divisions, program administration, and long-range planning;
• Experiences in managing complex assignments and initiatives, project development, and program evaluation;
• Experiences in organizing and providing professional development with teachers and other adult learners;

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or higher in education preferred; extensive experience in working with gifted education, K-12 required; specialization and endorsement in gifted education preferred;
• Previous experience in STEM education preferred;
• Previous experience in educational leadership preferred;
• Postgraduate professional license eligibility preferred.
