As the Security and Privacy Activist, you will be responsible for EFF’s flagship security education resource Surveillance Self-Defense (SSD), as well as a range of public-facing communication aimed... at guiding users through digital security and privacy news and developments. The ideal candidate can speak up against unjust data collection and security invasions while helping others take clear steps to protect themselves. This includes translating legal and technical digital rights issues for a general audience, drawing on issue areas from across EFF’s work, and strategizing to ensure EFF is speaking to—and expanding—its audience effectively. You can respond quickly, usually with written material, to tight deadlines while maintaining a focus on long-term goals and priorities. You’re a great project manager who can see a major project through to completion while also handling routine, day-to-day tasks. You aren’t afraid to propose bold ideas or experiments, and can keep the big picture of EFF’s digital rights mission in mind while mobilizing colleagues around the latest security news or developments.

This position is part of a highly cross-disciplinary Activism team, and will collaborate regularly with our organizing, legal, and technologist colleagues. As threats to digital civil liberties arise, you may need to quickly get up to speed on breaking consumer privacy and security issues, and be prepared to incorporate them into our public-facing materials.

We value candidates who bring diverse experiences and perspectives, professional and otherwise, to our team and to EFF as a whole. If you can add value to EFF’s Activism team, please apply.

What You’ll Do

The Security and Privacy Activist, who reports to the Associate Director of Digital Strategy, is responsible for the following:
• Ensuring Surveillance Self-Defense materials are accurate, accessible, and periodically updated, including by maintaining an update calendar for these projects and facilitating as-needed update sprints;
• Leading the EFF security education group’s response to breaking news, such as new security threats, novel vulnerabilities, and feature changes to popular tools;
• Developing new SSD guides and other written material with relevant activist, legal, and technologist colleagues while considering SSD scope, priorities, and resources;
• Assessing EFF’s security education activities to help the organization continually improve its digital advocacy and reach new audience and communities;
• Publicly representing EFF positions with the media, policy makers, and peer advocacy organizations, and maintaining communication with tech company counterparts.

What We’re Looking For

To be successful in this job, you’ll need:
• Excellent writing and editing skills: You have experience writing and editing collaboratively, including sharing and receiving feedback and navigating the disagreements that may come with it. You can research and write about digital rights issues for diverse audiences, whether diving deep within your own expertise or pinch-hitting on related areas.
• Familiarity with digital civil liberties issues: You are familiar with and interested in digital rights issues in security and privacy, and you look at complex technology and policy developments from a user perspective. This does not need to come from professional experience, and could be demonstrated through volunteering, personal interest, or education and coursework.
• Project management skills: You can steward a major project through to completion while also handling routine, day-to-day tasks. You have a track record of successfully managing complex projects while working with a diverse group of stakeholders, both inside and outside the organization.

Any of the following skills and areas of expertise would also be advantageous:
• Familiarity with social media, including summarizing complex topics into short posts, reviewing analytics, and experimenting with growing platforms
• Video development and editing experience

If you were here right now, you would be:
• Investigating new security and privacy features like Apple’s Advanced Data Protection for iCloud and Google’s end-to-end encryption for Gmail and creating guides to explain how they work, how to adopt them, and what to consider before doing so.
• Working with our Translations Coordinator on a strategy to reach new audiences with our translated SSD materials.
• Working alongside our Public Interest Technology team to manage EFF’s response to breaking security and privacy news, such as new security threats, novel vulnerabilities, and features changes to popular tools.
• Digging into weekly statistics on blog readership, social media pick-up, and SSD usage to determine where EFF should devote resources to updating, retiring, or developing new SSD guides.
