ABOUT THE JOB
This position is responsible for performing basic Circulation activities and providing excellent customer service. The work is performed in a busy office environment, where both speed and accuracy are essential. Work in this classification requires basic knowledge of and experience with library operations, procedures, systems, and equipment. Work guidelines are available in the form of regulations, policies, procedures, and instructions. Individuals carry out routine assignments independently once procedures and policies are learned. The work is performed under the supervision of the Circulation Supervisor.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
• Register new customers for library cards; renew cards and update records; replace lost cards. Explain and enforce procedures and policies to borrowers related to library usage.
• Collect, receipt, and post money to patrons' accounts for fees, fines and the replacement cost of lost and damaged library materials. Referring negotiations or more complex interactions to Circulation Assistant III or higher.
• Check in, check out, and renew library materials.
• Manage reserves by placing exact title holds for customers; referring more complex requests to Librarian.
• Retrieve materials and reconcile reports.
• Respond to customer inquiries, both in person and over the phone, providing information within scope of knowledge or refer to appropriate co-worker.
• Assist customers in the use of library materials and equipment.
• Assist Librarians with programs.
• Organize and shelve materials according to the classification system employed by the library. Maintain accurate order of materials on shelves.
• Process newspapers and magazines.
• Straighten work areas and public seating areas by picking up materials and debris and arranging chairs.
• Package interlibrary loan materials for shipment.
• Search and pull materials from a list.
• Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
• Perform all functions assigned to lower classifications.
