The Department of Life and Physical Sciences Department at Fisk University is seeking a full-time. This is a full-time, 12- month position. The University invites applicants and nominations. Applicants must demonstrate a high level of competence in basic biochemistry/molecular biology skills, organization, record keeping, and collegiality. An interest/willingness to develop skills in structural biology/biophysics is required, although experience is not necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The research assistant is responsible for providing technical support in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Damo, Chair of the Department of Life and Physical Sciences. The research focuses on understanding molecular mechanisms at the host-pathogen interface using the tools of biochemistry and structural biology. The research assistant will be part of a highly interdisciplinary team of undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and faculty. Additionally, the lab maintains a number of collaborations with colleagues at nearby Vanderbilt University and nationally.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Learn and perform various research procedures and operate a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment including autoclaves, PCR machines, chromatography systems, and biophysical instrumentation
2. Conduct recombinant protein expression using (primarily) E. coli
3. Electrophoresis of protein (and DNA) gels
4. Precisely document research activities in laboratory notebook
5. Maintain and assist in development and documentation of laboratory SOP
6. Assist with procurement of lab reagents, equipment and maintenance of laboratory inventory
7. Reports on status of research activities in oral and written formats
8. Engage in day-to-day activities within the lab, including buffer/reagent preparation for general lab use, basic reporting, data entry
9. Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related field and three years of experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
• Possess the ability to function independently and effectively resolve problems, meet deadlines, and produce quality work with attention to detail.
• Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students, postdocs, faculty, and other personnel on campus.
• Be highly organized; Possess strong computer skills in using Word and Excel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master's Degree in biochemistry is preferred.
• Additional experience in lab safety training highly desired.
