After a year of hacking things together to reach 5k students, she met Austin Monroe and Tan Ho on Reddit and the team became official with Amanda as the teacher brain, Austin the developer, and Tan the designer and SEO guru. Soon after, Aaron Levin (developer) and LG (SEO... specialist) joined the team, and the team continues to grow as we speak. In 2020, we have already supported over 1M students.
What we're building:
Even before COVID, high school students would find themselves boppin' around the internet searching for resources, but unsure of what to trust and who to ask for help. Tutors are expensive, great teachers are not always accessible, and the opportunity gap is wide. Post-COVID, this gap has increased 10x as teachers and schools scramble to provide online materials, but so many students are still left out. At Fiveable, we're building a new social learning network that empowers students and teachers to support each other through live streams, study guides, and interactive games. Learning should be fun, social, and accessible to every student.
Who we're looking for:
In the last few months, we have nearly quadrupled our user base since schools have been closed. This has caused our development team to be on a full sprint developing new features that meet the needs of the students, teachers, and Fiveable stakeholders to improve our web application performance, UI, and UX.
We are looking for a creative, passionate front-end or full-stack developer, who is interested in having their work be impactful. If you want to clock-in and clock-out and get your work done, then wipe your hands clean, we're not looking for you. We want the person who pours their heart into their work. Who cares about the application they are building. Who cares about the mission behind the triumphs and failures. Who wants to participate in making Fiveable the best EdTech platform to ever exist. Who wants to be an essential part of our small, passionate team. And who has interest in growing their career alongside a venture-backed startup. The students we support need engineers this dedicated.
You are:
• * Creative - You always find a way to get something done.
• * Passionate - You care deeply and pour yourself into what you do.
• * Efficient - You work smarter, not harder.
• * Candid - You communicate consistently and authentically.
• * Flexible - You go with the flow and find new paths to your goals.
• Responsibilities:
• * Be an imaginative innovator, a pioneer, an intellect, and an idea hamster.
• * Analyze all of the current systems and processes
• * Develop new user-facing features using React.js
• * Build reusable components
• * Learn and apply new technologies that improve the development process or UX
• * Keep your current tasks updated in our project management tools
• * Be involved in meetings, speak your mind, share ideas for product improvements
• * Be a problem solver; be resourceful; help your teammates when you can
• Required Skills:
• * Extensive knowledge of React.js, Redux, Node.js, HTML, CSS, and Firebase
• * Minimum 6 years of professional React development experience
• * Translate designs and wireframe into high quality code
• * Optimize components for maximum performance across all devices and browsers
• * Familiarity with RESTful APIs
• * Knowledge of isomorphic React is a plus
• * Understanding of Git and NPM
• * Ability to quickly identify issues and debug code in high-pressure situations
• Nice to Have Skills:
• * Experience with Next.js, Storybook, Typescript
• * Fast-paced, agile startup development experience
• * Experience with unit and integration testing for React
• * Experience with TensorFlow
• Tools we use:
• * Firebase
• * Asana
• * Google Suite
• * Google Analytics
• * Mixpanel
• * Slack
• * Zapier
• * Intercom
• * Figma
• Benefits:
• * Competitive Salary
• * Unlimited PTO

We're focused on building a diverse team and are inclusive of all backgrounds. And we're big on growth mindsets - we're all learning! Requirements Who we're looking for We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer to help us develop new features and workflows, so that we can deliver a world-class product experience to our students. The ideal candidate will have strong breadth & depth of technical knowledge, prioritization skills, and a demonstrated ability to deliver excellent software across the stack (frontend, backend, dev ops, etc. where needed). This candidate is comfortable and enjoys working in a team but also independently as needed to tackle larger initiatives. We are looking for someone with strong technical prowess, agility, and communication skills. This candidate can communicate challenges to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, setting accurate expectations early and often in their development process. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, flexible environment, and the thought of working at an early-stage startup is exhilarating for them. You are:
A Learner - You know that every project poses new challenges and opportunities to learn, and that excites you! Passionate - You understand the big picture, and care deeply about using technology to solve problems for students. Creative - Eager to think outside the box and bring your own ideas to the table. Efficient - You keep it simple. Always working smarter, not harder. Candid - You communicate consistently and authentically Flexible - You go with the flow and find new paths to your goals. Empathetic - You understand how others feel and know why they act the way they do A Problem-Solver - You take initiative and present solutions to problems that you encounter or notice. You should have:
5-10 years of experience in frontend, backend, or full-stack roles. Experience with React and NextJS. Experience with, or interest in developing real-time applications, leveraging technologies like Websockets or WebRTC. Experience with Test Driven Development. Some knowledge of frontend (React) and backend (misc.) software design patterns. Nice to haves (or willing to learn!):
Prior design experience, comfort working independently on new features. Comfort & excitement for working on greenfield projects and experimental new features. MERN stack experience (especially MongoDB, ExpressJS). Prior experience developing public or private APIs. Experience improving developer experiences through dev ops or other tooling (Terraform, Docker, Circle CI / Jenkins, etc.). Responsibilities Apply your full-stack expertise to deliver exceptional product experiences that heighten student productivity. Short-Mid Term Work closely with engineering, design, and product to scope and deliver well-tested, maintainable new features. Optimize and iterate upon existing features and systems. Support backend engineers in revamping and optimizing our backend systems. Prioritize quality by instilling best-practices for automated testing and monitoring. Mid-Long Term Learn and leverage frameworks across our entire stack (Mongo, Express, React, NextJS, NodeJS, SocketIO, Terraform, Google Cloud, Sentry, DataDog, etc.). Independently lead the end-to-end development of experimental new features. Propose opportunities rooted in technical capabilities to improve product and/or developer experience. Balance your time between coding, architecting, and scoping larger initiatives. We are especially interested in finding a candidate that is representative of our student population. We strongly encourage BIPOC, queer, trans, first-generation, and other individuals from historically marginalized communities to apply.
